Career Goal
My career goal is to enter private equity once I graduate college. I have researched ways to get into private equity and there are a couple of ways. The first way and the option I am hoping to enter into the investment world is by getting a job directly into private equity straight out of college. The other option is to become a financial analyst for at least two years and then apply for private equity firms. Regardless of the path I end up pursuing I will go back to school or take night classes to receive a master's degree and get my MBA.
I want to pursue private equity for several reasons. The main reason is my interest in investing and having multiple revenue streams. I am a big advocate of passive income and not limiting your financial income streams to a single source. My reasoning is if something happens that is out of your control such as being laid off you still have income coming into your household. My other reason is my hobby (Cars and racing) is extremely expensive and private equity is known to pay well and that will help me live the life I want to. I am sure of this career 90% of the time but the other 10% comes whenever I am taking an exam and test anxiety takes over and makes me second guess my decision.
Steps for Success
The things I need to do to meet my career goal are to graduate college with good grades, make sure I keep doing internships and get good references that I can use on my resume. I also need to get a master's degree but I can do that through night classes or going back to school after a couple years. The steps I need to take to climb the ladder and be successful all start once I can get a private equity internship and increase my knowledge about everything private equity.
Learning
Professional Identity
Accounting and Finance major in college with 4 years experience as an accounting manager for a logistics company. Disciplined and excited to constantly be learning and improving my experience in the finance world.
My professional Identity complements my internship by using my accounting experience to accomplish my tasks in an efficient and timely manner. My professional Identity challenges my work by making the tasks to simple once I have completed them, therefore I am not consistently learning.
Knowing my professional Identity contributes to my career goals because I need to be constantly learning to enter private equity. Gaining more experience in finance will help me enter private equity significantly easier and that has confirmed which career I would like to enter. I have researched multiple industries and my professional Identity helped me decide on Private Equity.
What I Learned
My academics connect with my internship through my class K303 where I learn how to make dashboards and use Excel efficiently. This class teaches how to make datasets which is exactly what I use at the internship and my project is to create dashboards which is also taught in this class. The class has taught me to be more efficient when inputting data into the table. I learned how to create dashboards through Excel and this internship project requires me to create a dashboard without using Excel and input it onto a website created on Wix. My internship doesn't help with my academics but helps me learn new skills with the project.
