This teaching philosophy, titled “The Transformative Power of Art Education,” represents my evolving beliefs as a junior pre-certification art educator. Grounded in both personal experience and educational theory, it reflects my commitment to creating inclusive, student-centered art classrooms where creativity, identity, and cultural connection are central. As someone still growing in my practice, I view this philosophy not as a final product, but as a living framework that will continue to shift as I gain more experience.
Key ideas include:
Art as identity and transformation: Art is a mirror and a lens, helping students see themselves and imagine new possibilities.
Student-centered learning: Influenced by Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) and Studio Habits of Mind (SHoM), I encourage student choice, exploration, and voice in the classroom.
Culturally responsive teaching: I strive to acknowledge and celebrate students' experiences through curriculum and classroom culture.
Empathy and connection: Inspired by my grandfather’s words, “I see you with the hope that you will see me too,” I aim to foster trust and care in every learning space.
“Art is not just a product—it’s a process of becoming, belonging, and believing.”
Art for social awareness: My teaching is informed by Social Justice Art Education principles. I use art to spark dialogue, challenge bias, and promote equity.
This philosophy captures where I am in my journey and what I hope to bring into my future classrooms: a safe, empowering, and creative space where students are free to be themselves, learn from one another, and use art to understand both who they are and the world they live in.
