Challenges:
One challenge that I experienced earlier on in the semester was a lack of work and projects to focus on. Because of this, it was hard to feel like I was making any significant contributions or gaining new skills. However, toward the end of the fall semester and throughout the spring I've been able to spearhead my own project so I have had a reasonable amount of work that is also challenging in a way that I enjoy and allows me to learn. My supervisor was a great help in overcoming this obstacle as she allowed me to take charge of one of her projects and trusted me to do things I had had no previous experience with, which allowed me to learn new skills very rapidly.
Successes:
My greatest success as an intern has been in learning how to work with the REDCap software. REDCap is a data collection and survey distribution tool that is often used in clinical settings, and throughout my time as an intern I've learned how to use it to craft surveys for research and clinical use. My major work with REDCap has included the creation of my own survey from scratch to be used in my supervisor's migraine clinic, with the scoring of each clinical measure coded into the surveys, as well as the the correction and fine-tuning of another set of REDCap surveys that will be used for research by one of our collaborating teams. I'm very pleased with having gained this as a skill because as a future medical student and physician, it is very likely that I will have to conduct work with clinical surveys, making this a skill that I can directly apply to my future work.
