Internship
About the Internship:
Our mission is to improve the quality of care for pediatric patients suffering from chronic pain due to a variety of causes. It is our hope that by studying the various factors that influence pediatric pain patients' experience of their condition and the care that they receive, we may be able to identify areas where the quality of the care that we provide can be improved. A person's experience of pain is incredibly influenced by their psychological state, so there are numerous ways that we may be able to help make them feel better other than the work directly related to their physical health and well-being.
Workplace:
While I started off with my skills for analyzing scientific articles and ability to work independently as my initial strengths as a team member, I was later able to offer my limited understanding of coding as a strength as well. Because my other team members were slightly less adept with coding and the technical sides of working with databases, I took over the tasks that centered on these skills and my teammates and I were able to divide and conquer. In this way, I believe that I was able to make important contributions to several ongoing projects that my research team is involved with, as I was the main person to work with the data collection instruments we would use to conduct our research.
However, there were many areas that were equally important to our research yet not my strong suit, such as the recruitment process. These were the areas that my teammates spearheaded and through this I was able to see how each person in a team has their own strengths and it is the contribution of all of these strengths which allows the best results. I would like to continue developing my abilities in conducting the more technical sides of research and clinical tasks, as well as make connections and build relationships with field professionals who I will be able to meet through my connections with my site.
Project Summary:
The focus of this project is the development of a comprehensive survey which wil be used in a clinical setting and possibly in future research to evaluate the various factors that influence pediatric chronic headaches.
