Getting the most out of my work modules, to fully understand what is needed from me in my lab.
Utilizing my supervisor to help me through the program by asking questions about what the data means.
Putting lab work into practice and understanding how to break down the research data.
I am capable now of understanding what the data means within my lab, and understanding how to analyze the research.
2. How to present, and explain, data findings
Observe other presentations done on the data by the other members in the lab.
Asking questions within my lab meetings, to understand the other research happening in the lab.
Working on my LHSI project with my PI, so I understand how the research I work on specifically is impactful.
Last semester I presented my data at an undergraduate research convention. I was able to ask thorough questions, and had practice showing and explaining data, and what our lab does.
3. Understanding my role within a Lab
Meeting members in Lab and ask about their partcipation in the research.
Attending the group lab meetings when I am needed.
Keeping up with research and focus on who is doing what, so I understand the full project.
I have stayed connected with the other members of my lab. We meet up bi-weekly to talk about what task have been completed and what needs to be done.
I plan to attend graduate school to become an Occupational Therapist. This is because I want to help children with disabilities learn how to do everyday task to grow independence and self-positivity. I have these goals because I grew up watching my mom as a special education teacher, and realized I found my passion. I am very confident in this career choice; I have done numerous shadowing opportunities which have grown my love for this field even more.
My goals sense the internship has started have stayed about the same. I still plan to go to graduate school and become an occupational therapist. My current focus is to gain more shadowing experiences before the semester ends- and to have a regular shadowing job to increase hours this summer. Making sure I am successful in all my pre-requisite courses is also important to me as I prepare for graduate school. I have a year and a half until I apply for graduate school, so ensuring everything is together is a large goal of mine.
For this summer and the rest of my time at IUPUI, I plan to continue gaining shadowing hours at multiple locations and work hard on my pre- requite courses. This way I am most prepared for the occupational therapy graduate school applications. This internship has confirmed my goals of being a pediatric occupational therapy with a focus on children with disabilities. It has educated me on all the services that are essential for children with disabilities (such as occupational therapy). Through my lab I have had the opportunity to get to hear stories from parents who have children with autism spectrum disorder, and how important it is that their child is able to work with an occupational therapist.
