a) Understand neuroimaging
This goal will help me use the knowledge that I learn in the classroom in real-life situations.
Educate myself on how to locate the brain in MRI images
Learn about the different views of the brain: axial, coronal, sagittal
Mask the brain on MRIs
b) Learn time management in a professional setting
This goal will help me complete my responsibilities in medical school
Set aside time for this internship in my schedule
Make a goal of how many images I should complete every week
Keep my supervisor posted
c) Get published
This goal will better my medical school application
Communicate effectively with my mentor
Be proactive in my research work
Hard work and dedication along with being informed about the topic
My current career goal is to increase my overall GPA and perform well on the MCAT to have a strong application for medical school. I eventually want to be a physician after being inspired by various opportunities that I am a part of at college such as scribing in the Eskenazi ED, doing a clinical internship at IUSM in endocrinology & diabetes, and volunteering in a psychiatric department related to autism.
I have been sure about this career since the beginning of my undergraduate career when I applied for majors in Biology and Neuroscience. This year, I am interning at Riley in Radiology through LHSI and will eventually get my Medical Assistant certification next semester to gain insight into different specialties across medicine and healthcare.
Over the past year, I have been pushing forward with my goals. I have signed up for the MCAT and have started checking out potential medical schools. I've even begun working on my personal statement and activities section for the application.
On top of that, I had this amazing opportunity to go to Geneva, Switzerland during spring break for a study abroad program called "Health Systems Around the World." I had the opportunity to visit places like the United Nations, Doctors Without Borders, the Red Cross Museum, the World Health Organization, and Geneva University Hospital. It was eye-opening and really solidified my passion for pursuing medicine.
I plan on dedicating my time to working on my AMCAS application, aiming to make it as strong as possible. Additionally, I'm hoping to land a job as a medical assistant, specifically in dermatology, to gain some valuable clinical experience.
a) Skills I'm using and confident in:
1) Communication: I am effectively using this skill by providing clear and informative responses to your questions.
2) Independence: I can independently generate responses and provide information without needing assistance.
b) Skills I would like to continue working on:
1) Teamwork: While I prefer to work independently, teamwork is a valuable skill. To develop it further, I could work on collaborative projects with colleagues or engage in group discussions to improve my ability to work effectively in a team setting.
2) Problem-solving: I can always improve my problem-solving abilities by tackling more complex questions and seeking solutions, even in challenging situations.
c) Using and building on existing strengths or experiences:
I have a strong foundation in Integration and Application. I am using the concepts that I learned in my classes, such as Foundations of Neuroscience and Systems Neuroscience, in this internship to solve problems or explore issues.
d) Deeper understanding of coursework or major:
As a Biology and Neuroscience major, my internship has taught me about the different views of the brain, how to read MRI images, and how to identify the brain and placenta.
