I am premed because I want to go into a field where I can help make a positive impact in people’s lives. Being premed will also open the door to a lot of different opportunities across the world to make a diffrence. I would love to provide low-cost/free medical care to people struggling with inaccessible medical care.
Driven, Analytical, Innovative, Responsible, Leadership
I volunteered at a Sunday school as an assistant teacher. This is a yearly commitment, and I was placed with first graders this year. I feel that this experience is important to me as it allowed me to gain important skills such as patience and teamwork. Since I do work with the teacher and the other assistant teachers. I learned to be more patient with the kids as they are still young and try their best to process the information. Furthermore, I also held mentor meetings through OTEAM to discuss how the semester was going with my students who were incoming freshmen. This experience has been very eye-opening so far as I got to me a lot of amazing individuals from various backgrounds, and I got to connect with them and form meaningful relationships with my students. Through this experience, I was able to develop my listening skills and make sure I understood and advocated for my students instead of just providing resources. I have also had the privilege of being a recitation leader for students taking chemistry. This experience not only challenged my understanding of the course content, but it also taught me the importance of catering to different types of learning styles. I was also able to think creatively about different ways I was explaining things to my students. All in all, these experiences have been very rewarding as I got to see growth in all my students and nothing makes me happier than seeing my students succeed and reach their goals. I find joy in knowing that I was able to create an environment that made my students feel comfortable and safe. I have also joined Jagathon as a chairman of the fundraising committee. This experience has been the most challenging in the aspect of getting outside of my comfort zone. I was able to develop my marketing skills by reaching out to donors for a good cause. In being this involved I have found that I need to work on my time management skills. This is a skill that I continue to work on throughout this semester.
When reflecting on my experiences throughout the fall semester, one experience stands out in particular. I am an assistant teacher at a Sunday school, and this fall I was placed with a first-grade class. It just so happened to be the biggest class at the school, so it ended up being a very hands-on experience where I got to work directly with each kid to help them memorize Quran and read Arabic at a basic level. This took a lot of patience and repetition, but I feel that it taught me many valuable lessons. This experience has taught me to think creatively and work with others to create lesson plans that will be encouraging for the kids. One skill I was able to build on was my patience and compassion. Furthermore, I learned how to become a better advocate for myself and others. There were a few conflicts that arose and I took initiative to make sure the kids were able to learn in an environment they felt safe and comfortable in.
