Project Summary
For my LHSI Research project, I am creating content for an interactive platform highlighting sex education that will utilize concerns and interest of Indiana Youth. Data will be pulled and analyzed from the Indiana Proud and Connected Teens(IN-PACT), and Indiana Connected and Supported Teens( IN-CAST )research projects to inform the platform.
Learning outcomes:
Make people aware of how unaware youth are about sex
Help others learn about their bodies, and how to take care of their sexual/reproductive health.
Spread awareness around possible laws that are harmful to society around sex education
IN-CAST
This program mainly focused on sti and pregnancy prevention, so a lot of the feedback about things they learned revolved around using condoms, and dental dams
When youth were asked about things they wanted to learn more about, the following topics were listed:
How to have sex the “right” way
Pregnant teens
What girls like
Lgbtq topics
Sex toys
Healthy relationships
Transhealthcare
What sex is to other people
Talking to trusted adult
Addiction and sex
IN-PACT
3 most learned about topics
35 responses- risk around being sexually active
30- safe sex/ how to put on condoms
29- birth control methods
Categories with low responses
14 responses- topics of pregnancies
6-sex organs/genitalia
7-ideas around consent
7-attitudes towards general health
I noticed the drastic difference in responses. To me, this reflects that there needs to be more talks about general health and consent, rather than just focusing on risk, and abstinence.
Other Topics Youth Had Interest In:
Talks about rape
Ways to give consent during sex
Sex positions
Why people say porn is fake
Things to note:
Instead of just talking about reproductive science, we need to have more talks about things such as ideas around consent and overall health. It seems like this might be hard to do since most sex ed programs are required to talk bout anatomy etc.
