Professional Goals

My goal is to go to medical school after I graduate from IUPUI.

Why Medicine

My interest in becoming a physician comes from how medicine is a combination of science as well as community and social work. Growing up, I watched my mother suffer from mental illness as well as substance abuse. I grew up with many emotional and financial challenges that came with my mom's condition. Additionally, I have seen many women in my family be affected by hereditary gynecological cancers. Through watching my familys' experiences, I have learned the importance of empathy and compassion. I'd find a career helping underserved populations as either an OB/GYN or psychiatrist especially rewarding, but I am still exploring many other healthcare careers.

Strengths and Weaknesses

One of my strengths is working with others. Throughout the isolation I've experienced throughout the pandemic, I've learned that I really enjoy working with a team. I like getting to know others and being part of a community. On the contrary, I do not like monotonous, independent work. This is part of the reason I think becoming a physician is a good fit for me as opposed to research.

The technical skills I have acquired through my undergraduate career and research internships are western blotting, titration, distillation, TLC, and more. I can also perform cell culturing and proliferation assays such as CCK8, BRDU, and Thyamine. I worked at a pharmacy for one year, so I am a licensed technician and can fill prescriptions. I am also adept at analyzing data using Geomagic 3D software, Excel, R and SQL. I have worked in 3 laboratories, but due to the fact that they are only internships that start and end at specific times, I have not had the chance to publish anything.

I am also a very empathetic and can easily adapt to situations. I have personally witnessed close family members deal with physical and psychological illness. I believe I am capable of seeing the underlying factors of how and why trauma manifests itself within vulnerable population. I also moved a lot growing up, so adapting to new situations and environments is not new to me. I think the downside of this is that I see so many things that can be improved in society, that I take on too many responsibilities such as workgroups, mentoring positions, and volunteering.
