About Me

I am junior majoring in neuroscience BS. I wish to be a Physical Therapist and I also have the interest to join the field of research. When I was young I had an interest to study the wonders of life, and day by day I get surprised to find out how complex is the structure of life. Studying biology has led me to discover the wide range of its fields and the opportunities that it offers for the society. I have the familiarity and the background in working in labs. I find subjects such as biology and chemistry to be fascinating, and the knowledge of these fields are important to understand the basic principals of life. According to NASA life is "A self-sustaining chemical system capable of Darwinian evolution." Therefore we need to understand this unique system of nature in order to make things better for ourselves as well as for others. This made me choose Neuroscience major that is an intersection between molecular, physiological, computational, behavior and developmental fields conducting extensive studies about neurons and treating neurological disorders. The LHSI internship position in Dr. Thirumala's lab has offered a different method about learning on treatments for diseases using vertebrae derived stem cell therapy and this has made me intrigued to learn more about these cells.

My role as a team member

Being a strong team member is a strength that I believe to share with my other colleagues in this internship program. Although it may not sound of great importance, this strength of mine helped me to excel quite a lot of situations that I was less confident to perform. A good team member is someone who fulfills his duties and makes others get involved and feel welcome at all times. Not giving up hope on others, being there on behalf on someone else, appreciating others work, carefully considering the preferences of the members of the team and trying to create a space of equal rights and opportunity is a plus to be a great player in team effort.

I contributed to the team work for the lab in my internship program by assisting in some of their projects and brought out questions to uplift the enthusiasm. I mainly prioritized their work and considered mine as the second. I participated in their discussions and meetings and attempted to make suggestions to carry out their plans successfully. I respected the protocols and disciplines when working in the lab by considering my responsibility as a member in the lab. I got charge of cleaning and maintaining the lab whenever I could since I had less responsibility there. Although each person has a unique way of performing things, I still managed to respect everyone's ideas and resolve conflicts.

My Skills and strengths

  • punctuality
  • dedication to work
  • experience and knowledge pertaining the field
  • ability to collaborate with people from different fields
  • ability to present information clearly
  • ability to design and implement plans
  • time management

During the internship I noticed there were several great professional qualities being displayed in the lab that I worked and I made certain to acquire some of those skills.

1. Having a great work life balance

2. Willingness to take certain risks

3. The importance of collaboration with experts

4. Quick adaptation for situation

Although I did have certain qualities that enabled me to reflect as a professional, there were certain things that made me look into my behavior and attitude to move forward to the moderate level. I considered to be a punctual person, but if I am required to attend early as 6.30 am for an experiment and if I get late for 10 minutes that might prove my perception to be wrong. So I tried my best to be on time on odd occasions and to be consistent through out. When I first started as an intern, I was very anxious and nervous and accepting challenges helped me to perform well in my tasks. At times especially in a lab things can get unexpected and I did my best to adapt and accomplish certain goals without relying on others and that meant a lot to me. I introduced myself into the habit of questioning and reflecting on other people's work and that helped me to keep up with timely information and as well as to network with people. I can agree this internship has greatly prepared me for further challenges in life and I am eager to continue my professional development further.
