Introduction

The Overview module provides a high-level summary of higher education institutions and systems to contextualize the global shift from teaching universities to research universities. This module builds a foundational understanding of types of higher education institutions, the global issues affecting them, the various regulatory bodies and governmental agencies that oversee higher education institutions, higher education governance theories, and academic culture and freedom.

Learning Goals

Explain how the comprehensive research university compares to the other types of institutions and identify the current global issues affecting them.
Identify the roles and responsibilities of different types of regulatory bodies and governmental agencies that oversee higher education and how they shape higher education institution accountability.
Apply relevant higher education governance theories to the analysis and improvement of academic organizations, programs and services.
Evaluate how academic and institutional culture shape the effectiveness of institutional leadership and the quality of organizational programs and processes.
