Goals

Internship Goals

1) Learn more about the data lifecycle in the research process.

This includes both data relevant to the final project and data used to aid in the setup, collection, and processing of the relevant data

I have continued to be involved with the longitudinal follow-up process at my internship site and meet with the professionals in my lab to learn more about their roles and the processes of research they represent. I have been able to learn more about specific tests, processes, and data collection methods associated with  my internship site while also gaining a more holistic understanding of research and what goes into turning the data into actionable knowledge.

I have communicated with others within my lab consistently and attended lab meetings. The engagement with the lab's activities as well as my constant communication and display of interest in learning about the research process has allowed me to build relationships with those in my lab and network outside of my lab's core team to meet and speak with other professionals.

2) Communicate and network with professionals in the research space to build relationships and glean insight into research as both a profession and an educational path.

3) Gain experience and skills that can be utilized on both my resume and graduate school applications.

Turn my experience in the research process into a marketable experience to increase my value as an employee and student.

Through my lab experience, I have gained a greater understanding of the research process and the processes associated with research. Along with these experiences, I have gained hard skills in Excel, Outlook, and Teams as well as skills in longitudinal follow-up processes and data cleaning.

Due to my early questioning, I have developed mastery over my role within the lab and often independently troubleshoot to resolve issues as they arise. I am also able to provide updates regarding my progress through tasks and any challeneges faced and how they were resolved.

4) Gain an increased sense of self-efficacy and improve my ability to work autonomously.

5) Increase my ability to work within a team.

Function and communicate effectively both in-person and over zoom, text, email, and other standard remote contact methods.

I have continued to communicate via email and zoom with participants, coworkers, and supervisors. With this experience has come more ability with communicating, scheduling, and supporting others in the lab. Additionally, by going into the lab often I have been able to engage with others both at my lab and within the building my lab is in to continue networking and building communication skills.

I have been attending the group meetings and actively participating in the meetings. I have also met with team members frequently to learn about and observe their roles within the lab, which has allowed me to increase my sense of working as a member of a team.

6) Increase the sense of working as a part of a team while working remotely.

Career Goals

My time at the Hulvershorn lab has cemented my decision to pursue research and Clinical Psychology. The experience in research and the self-reflection LHSI has had me engage in with the creation of the ePortfolio have allowed me to reaffirm my interest in psychology and discover a passion for research. By experiencing research’s potential to make an impact on the lives of others it has inspired me to engage in research to create new knowledge. Initially I had considered a PsyD instead of a PhD, but the PsyD would only prepare me for clinical practices, such as therapy. Due to the PhD allowing for a career in research, that is the degree I have chosen to seek out in my postgraduate career.

The specific steps toward my career of interest are mainly tied to the Clinical Psychology PhD program. These programs are highly competitive and my focus at the moment is on making myself a competitive applicant for these programs. I am doing so through engagement in research through LHSI, UROP, and my senior capstone, which allows for independent research. Additionally, I have been working to maintain an academic standing that is exemplary and will allow me to stand out and have been recognized with the School of Science Dean’s scholarship for the past 3 semesters. There are other extracurricular activities I have participated in at IUPUI to help develop my skills as a leader, professional, and well-rounded individual, such as my time as a tutor at the MAC, a mentor for the Honors College at IUPUI, and doing transcription work with the Fairbanks School of Public Health in their Grassroots Maternal & Child Health Initiative. I am also in the process of taking the GRE, gathering letters of recommendation, and getting my CV put together to reflect the experiences I have had at IUPUI. Through this involvement and dedication I hope to make myself a viable candidate for PhD candidacy in Clinical Psychology.
