Being born as a woman means you are often pressured to perform by hiding your true self, whether that be through physical appearance or through mindset. Many people who are assigned female at birth, or AFAB, feel the need to wear makeup, shave their body hair, or act in certain ways to make themselves attractive to men. Growing up, I often felt isolated and confused trying to apply beauty standards to myself when it didn’t feel authentic to my personality. My recent body of work investigates how pop culture affects the way AFAB people navigate the landscape of the 21st century.
