Communicate professionally and clearly articulate concepts
What I will do to achieve this goal:
Explain concepts to my friends, or in a lab meeting presentation
Do extra research on the words if I am unfamiliar
Ask my supervisor or other lab members for tips/advice.
Trust myself when it comes to my work
What I will do to achieve this goal:
Give myself credit when it’s due
Check with supervisor or other lab members if I am unsure
Take the time the first time to ensure that I didn’t miss something small and it spirals.
I want to have a better idea of what I want to do going forward in my career
What I will do to achieve this goal:
Keep an open mind when it comes to my future
Try out things I haven’t done before in order to broaden my scope
Look into the different aspects of how this career could look for me, or dive deeper into the specific topics discussed.
#1: I think I succeeded with this goal! I've been able to discuss my work with my friends and family and I think they've understand the main points of what's going on in the lab!
#2: This goal has been a bit more challenging. I think I worked on it a little bit but still have a long way to go as I continue through this field!
#3: I think being in this lab has given me a better idea of what I want to do in the future and gave insight to what a career in this field could look like.
My goal is to obtain a PhD and do research in either industry or academia, not too sure yet. I am passionate about science and find many topics fascinating, these are the types of things that I will have to remember what doing my own research and making steps toward my goal. It can be hard to keep the motivation through about 5 years of school but I think if I don't lose sight of why I am doing this it will make things 10x easier.
This summer, I plan to do full-time research at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona at their biomedical laboratory! For the rest of my time at IUPUI, I am currently looking toward my future and doing my capstone project; I want to find a lab I could stay in for the rest of my time here and make a lot of progress toward discovering something new!
My time in the lab confirmed many things I love about research and showed me something I have to look forward to in the future as a scientist.
