During my freshman year at college, I was employed at Walmart where I learned the values and hardships of working in customer service. This position, which I held for over a year, not only taught me more about my community, but it was also a great place for me to learn how to practice being patient and implement critical thinking and problem solving for when things did not go as planned. With this in mind, I usually approach more difficult situations with a back-up plan just to be safe! From what I have learned in my internship thus far, is that things can always stray away from the original plan. My past job experiences have provided me with the baseline skills for being able to cope with and comprehend the idea that not everything will always go the way it is intended to, and that a solution will eventually arise given time.
I am a member of an organization called OTEAM, where sophomores, juniors, and seniors have the opportunity to mentor freshman for their first semester at IUPUI. In this role, I consistently practiced active listening and expressive communication as I guided students through their first semester in higher education. While working in this position I realized that I was gifted at motivating students in the science field and even better at guiding them down the right path towards success! This was a great opportunity for me to reach out to knew individuals and encourage them to have a growth mind-set as a student in STEM.
A day at the Indianapolis Zoo with my mentees!

Currently, I am employed at Eskenazi ED as a Medical Scribe. I find myself extremely enjoying the high-paced, high-stress environment that ensues in the trauma specialty of medicine. The providers I work with, whether they be attendings, residents, or medical students, are all extremely kind and helpful to me while I am charting for them. This position gave me insight as to how employees in the medical field all act work as a team and function as a unit, which is what I strive to achieve in my future line of work. I am extremely glad that I chose to work in this position this early on so that I am well aware of the challenges that I may some day face.
By being a part of VIDA, I am able to work towards something of great importance to me, being ethical health issues in our society. This organization has played an integral part in influencing my career choices, as I now hope to serve those who are less fortunate in developing countries, as a certified physician.
In addition to the jobs I am employed at, I also play an active part in the Indianapolis community. I currently hold the position of Co-Director of International Service Trips for the organization VIDA. This stands for Volunteer Initiatives Domestic and Abroad, where students at IUPUI come together for the common goal of global health equity. My job in the position is to encourage students to volunteer not only in Indianapolis, but internationally so that VIDA is able to make its impact on the world. Aside from advertising, I also - along with another Director - construct a course for a yearly study abroad trip to a developing country. This position takes a lot of responsibility, and stress/time management because there are many moving parts. However, I feel as though I am a very driven individual, especially when it comes to ethical dilemmas such as global health equity. This, VIDA's goal, trumps any difficulties that this position may bring me, which are slim to none.
My most recently obtained position is research intern at the Herman B. Wells center for pediatric research through the Life-Health Sciences Internship program. I currently work in Dr. Mayo's lab, and through this position, I have gained and improved many transferable and lab skills. The skills I noticed that are significant for this position are active listening to the detailed procedures my supervisor gives me and critical decision-making for when things do not go according to plan.
