Through this internship I hope to gain confidence in speaking to those in higher levels of education and standing up for myself. I hope to improve on stating my opinions when they would be beneficial and asking questions when it is required.
The reason I hope to obtain this goal is because in my professional career, I will often be put in situations where the people that I am discussing things with are my superiors so learning how to better express my opinions and observations in a way that is more effective is something that would greatly benefit me in my future career. Sometimes it is difficult to speak on a difficult topic with a supervisor so gaining this experience would be very beneficial.
I would also like to grow in experience in analyzing data and constructing ways to best share said data.
To achieve this goal, I will work closely with my coworkers to better understand how they are formatting information. This will help me to better understand the ins and outs of Excel and analyzing how other studies present work. To accomplish this, I will have lots of trial and error and asking questions of my supervisors. I would also want to learn how to put this data into understandable terms and therefore make it more applicable in a real industry.
I would like to make improvements in my observation skills. This can be done just by noticing things while testing is taking place, working to learn by observation.
Many times I catch myself asking questions and getting frustrated before a task is even explained or elaborated on. Working to watch closely and think before asking questions is a goal I think will be important to achieve for my future career. So many times, the answers to your questions will come eventually without even having to ask, so I would like to improve on this skill.
Currently, my goal after my undergraduate degree is to get my masters in Healthcare Administration. Upon graduation I would love to work in administration in a physician's office. These choices have come from a multitude of factors. Not only am I passionate about healthcare, I also know my strengths and clinical work isn't for me. I know that I am skilled in the analyzing of data, accounting and policy keeping. I have also developed a love for accounting and finances so having the chance to do those things in my future career would be a wonderful opportunity. This makes me sure of the career plan I have chosen.
To accomplish these goals I am very careful in each of my classes to not only do well in the class but also understand how these tools will be applied in my future career. These classes can lead to a successful career in the future so I take each assignment seriously and with the knowledge that these skills must be retained. To better prepare myself, I would like to get in touch with professors and nearby professionals that have done the same career path that I am doing. The School Of Public Health here at IUPUI does a great job of getting us connected with people that know much more than us. These are going to be the people that are able to give the most beneficial advice about how to plan for my future.
In my internship, I am developing skills connecting with patients and resolving conflicts which is incredibly important in an administration position. I would like to continue to develop those skills so that I am more advanced in my position. I am also wanting to develop skills in strategically planning and organizing a schedule. I've been learning this more at my site but it is a goal in my career that I would like to continue to develop. This really makes it more clear how my goals and ideas for my future have changed. I feel as though I understand more about what my career looks like and what I will be doing so now it is all about developing those skills to be an even better administrator.
In the next month I've set some goals for myself to develop my skills:
First off, I have planned an informational interview to learn more about my future career and the best ways to get there. I am also beginning to apply for future internship programs that can lead me to advancing my knowledge.
