I am a sophomore at IUPUI majoring in Exercise Science. I am also focusing on pre-med courses rather than pre-physical therapy or athletic training. I chose Exercise Science over a Biology degree because of my love for sports but my fascination with health and science influenced my pre-med path. With this combination I get the best of both worlds.
As a team member, I am able to communicate with my peers and divide a workload to ensure a smooth collaboration. I am also open to working with all kinds of new people.
My previous experiences have taught me that being a part of a team means doing your part and trusting that others will do theirs. They also taught me that communication is a key factor when being a part of a team. I try to be sensitive towards others and always ensure to come off as respectful. I am fond of the principle "treat others how you want to be treated."
Over the years I have worked in different environments with people of varying ages and cultural backgrounds. My first job was at an Old Navy in my hometown. From there, I worked at a local bubble tea shop called Bubble Bee and more recently, I worked at an Amazon fulfillment center.
As far as volunteer work, I did most of my hours at Well Spring Food Bank during high school. During this time, I also volunteered at an organization called Turnstone Center for Children & Adults with Disabilities. Turnstone is a recreational facility that holds several paralympic sports which fueled my interest in Exercise Science. However, because of COVID I was unable to volunteer at Turnstone as much as I wanted, but I enjoyed my time there most of all.
I am grateful for all the opportunities I have come across; I believe they have helped me narrow down the type of tasks that I enjoy and the ones that might not be for me. Working mainly in customer service taught me that I like surrounding myself with people. There are ups and downs but overall, I enjoy actively listening and trying to come up with a solution to enhance a customer's experience. At bubble bee, I was able adapt and make special drinks requested by customers. Old Navy helped me discover that I do not enjoy taking inventory, and Amazon helped me realize that I do not like working at warehouses at all.
Being in college for almost two years has also helped develop my time-management skills. Balancing assignments, bills, the gym and time for self-care is not always easy but a schedule definitely makes it easier to manage.
These opportunities helped develop my listening skills, but I believe I still need to develop my communication skills as I progress professionally.
I am also skilled in biology, much more than I am in chemistry. Biology I and II have been some of my favorite science courses and I can say my hard work paid off when I received the Ronald E. Kirk award for being a top student in freshman bio.
