Introduction
In August 2022, I began my Honors College journey as a Presidential Scholar. As a college freshman, I was eager to explore many different opportunities and pathways, which the Honors College provided me the ability to do. Introduction to Honors, a course for honors students, allowed me to reflect on who I was when beginning college, set goals for my future, and explore opportunities that I did not know existed at the time. Now, as I prepare to graduate, I have the opportunity to reflect on all of the experiences and personal growth I have had over the last 4 years.
My Freshman Year Intention Statement
Herbert Presidential Scholars Banquet February 2023
I am a person who values leadership and service. Because of this, I am dedicated to serving at my church, and in the community. I have volunteered as an assistant teacher in the preschool ministry, packaged/distributed food and clothing at the IMPACT center, helped build houses, and more. This passion has, and will continue, to guide my experiences throughout my journey at IUPUI.
I am a person who values hard work, organization, leadership, teamwork, growth, and service. These values have been crucial to my success as an honors student, and to my personal growth. I am also a very outgoing person and love to socialize with other people, which has allowed me to grow as an honors student by giving me many opportunities in the community.
I am a freshman studying Biology and Neuroscience on the pre-anesthesiologist assistant track. Over the next 4 years I will work to excel in everything I do. I want to continue growing in my knowledge relating to my major, and outside of my major. To do this, I will seek out any opportunities that may arise.
One main thing I want to focus on during my time at IUPUI is becoming a mentor and growing in my leadership skills. I want to become a leader that others look up to. As a freshman, I have had many mentors that have positively impacted my experience, and I want to do the same for future students.
Most importantly, I want to set and achieve many goals throughout my four years. Some initial goals include applying to LHSI, the Riley volunteer program, the OTEAM FYS program, and the Honors Peer Mentoring Program. I want to continue building connections, and these positions will allow me to do that.
First Year Seminar Class - Bridge Week 2022
In the future, I want to be an Anesthesiologist Assistant. I hope to attend Indiana University School of Medicine to receive my Master of Science in Anesthesia through the Anesthesiologist Assistant program. With the magnitude of this goal, I will do everything I can to achieve it. As an honors student, I will have many opportunities that will support me on my path to becoming an Anesthesiologist Assistant.
My Senior Year Intention Statement
I Am:
I am a graduating senior at Indiana University Indianapolis, studying Biology and Neuroscience. After graduation, I will be continuing my education through the Indiana University School of Medicine Anesthesiologist Assistant Program where I will earn my Master of Science in Anesthesia.
Through support of the Honors College, and my involvement on campus, I became a student leader, mentor, and high-achieving student. I have experience as a research intern, medical receptionist, first-year seminar and honors mentor, campus ambassador, emergency department volunteer, and have completed multiple mission trips. All of my experiences over the last four years have furthered my passion for leadership, service, and community engagement.
I Want to Become:
At the end of the day, I want to become a compassionate and effective Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant (CAA) that provides the highest possible care, prioritizing and respecting every patient that walks through the door. I am passionate about wanting to help those who do not have proper access to healthcare. My ultimate goal is to become a CAA, while also traveling to local and international communities where medical resources are in dire need. At some point in everyone’s lives they will have a connection with the medical field. I strive to make a positive impact when people are going through their best and worst moments, and I know that the best way I can do that is through becoming a CAA.
Reflection
As I reflect on my journey over the last four years, it is clear that I have grown a lot since starting as an honors student freshman year. Looking back on the goals I made as a freshman, there are many that I have achieved, but there are also many that I never thought would even be created. I am forever grateful for the experiences I have been able to take part in, and for the opportunities that were only possible through being an honors student at IU Indianapolis.

Many of my core values have remained the same but have strengthened over the last four years. I value teamwork, leadership, community engagement, and service at a higher level with the first-hand experience I have gained. One of my main goals when starting college was to seek out any opportunities that may arise, especially if they challenge me to grow. I can confidently say I have done this.
During my sophomore year, I had the opportunity to participate in the Honors College service learning study abroad trip to Costa Rica. This expanded my perspective of global needs and my passion for service, leading me to complete a mission trip through Casas por Cristo. On this trip, I was able to assist in building a house for a family in the Dominican Republic. Just a year later, I was able to complete a medical mission trip to Honduras through His Eyes, where I supported medical teams providing care throughout the country.
As a freshman, I never expected to participate in all of these life-changing opportunities. These real-world experiences allowed me to grow and become the person I am today. I would never have had these opportunities without being an honors student at IU Indy.
Since developing goals for my college and honors journey, I have successfully maintained a high GPA, started a long-term volunteer position, completed the LHSI internship, was recognized as a Top 100 student, and became a student mentor and team lead. Through the first-year seminar program, I have been able to support students on their first days of college, mentoring them every step of the way. Additionally, my students supported my personal growth and development in ways I never expected. I became more confident in my leadership and communication abilities, and strengthened my connection to campus.
As I prepare to graduate, I recognize how prepared I am to start the next chapter of my education because of my experiences at IU Indianapolis. Without the opportunities I was given as a student here, I would never have been accepted into my top choice of Anesthesiologist Assistant Programs. I am confident that, with the skills and confidence I have worked to develop over the last four years, I am set up for success in all future endeavors.
