COMMUNICATING IN CONTEXT: KNOW THE RHETORICAL SCENARIO
With websites, it is important to provide context and purpose on each page as well as navigation tips. This is part of demonstrating that you have audience awareness, that you are a considerate website host, and that you understand the rhetorical scenario. Readers want to know what is on the page they just opened.
Writers write in context. A writers awareness of the rhetorical scenario is key to successfully engaging audiences and achieving the desired purpose. When your writing is on the web, you will made different accommodations to help your readers know what they are looking at and why it is relevant.
Communicators communicate in context. There are norms that relate to content in context. From a marriage proposal, to an email announcement that students need to bring their instrument to pep band, to an end of year financial report, all communicators are making an argument: you should marry me, don't forget your flute, or invest with us--we made money last year.
WHEN BREAKING WITH NORMS WORKS
Sensitivity to genre expectations is part of cultural, social, business, and communication norms. It is customary to present an engagement ring when making a formal marriage proposal -- at least in U.S. based movies and medias. If the writer/director deviates from this norm, we notice. That "noticing" can be the thing that creates something unique and special -or- it can be the iceberg that sinks the Titanic.
There are precedents to break with norms. Sometimes it's even good to break with norms. The key is to be intentional, audience aware, and prepared to explain why breaking with the norm was the best option in a particular scenario.
For Writing in the Sciences, we are working to learn and practice the norms of making complicated scientific processes palatable for non-scientists. The tone, style, and content you opt to create will help a specific target audience better understand the difficult content that you are making accessible.Â
