About Me

Summary

Hi, thank you for visiting my page! My name is Elizabeth Corneille. I have a BA's in Health Science and a minor in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Also, I have a certificate in Applied Linguistics. I chose to pursue a career in Public health because I am concerned about health disparities in marginalized communities and want to use my voice to advocate on their behalf and contribute to social change. Additionally, I am passionate about advocacy and helping others with their healthcare needs as well as connecting communities with health resources. Furthermore, I want to focus on Women's Health because women are more likely to spend time in hospitals and are more vulnerable to many infectious diseases that often lead to health disparities. Therefore, I want to expand my knowledge in understanding social factors that affect women's health. As a woman myself and knowing the consequences of health disparities, I want to contribute to reducing health issues among women. I believe that both a MA's in public health and my minor in Women and Gender Studies will provide me with the necessary tools and skills to better prepare and assist those women and families, as well as meet them where they are.

Teamwork

I maintain good relationships with colleagues. I am reliable, flexible, and a good listener. I value diversity and inclusion. I can easily adapt to new things as well as new environments, and the top priority for me is to get the job done.

My Internship Skills

I interned with the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Department as the Assistant Director from Fall 2022- Spring 2023. My responsibility was to assist with helping faculty, students, and staff with the day-to-day operations of the Program.

I interned with the Indiana Department of Health from April-August 2023 as a Chronic Disease Assistant. I was responsible for doing research, and compiling recent and relevant data on chronic diseases and environmental factors that affect the population’s life. Also, I worked with additional interns and staff members to create COPD Fact Sheets highlighting the most relevant data found.

Leadership Experiences

I am the former President of (Triota) Iota Iota Iota Women’s & Gender Studies Honor Society At Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis. This organization encourages students, staff, faculty, and community members to engage in civil dialogue and activism to support social justice. It values feminism, teaching, scholarship, research, social justice, critical and engaged dialogue, the intersectionality of identities, access, collaboration, community involvement, and sustainability.

Also, I was an engaged member of the Black Student Union (BSU) which is an organization that promotes education, empowerment, diversity, and inclusion on campus.

I am a current member of Women4Change and IUI Women's Health Hub.

I interned with an organization in Haiti called AVD (Association des Volontaires pour la Democratie) from October 2016 through May 2018. AVD is a nonprofit organization the goal of which is to empower young Haitians who while going to college are dynamic enough and willing to balance work and school. They provide resources that help youths to plan their future and most of all engage in community development. AVD has different structures and I was a part of the structure called Gouvernement jeunesse d'Haiti (GJH). I was a recruiter of children in different cities in the country at first, and a few months later I was offered a job. I taught children with special needs as I have a certificate in Applied Linguistics. My duty was to assist teachers in the countryside schools of Haiti, promote a balanced bilingual (French and Creole) education in elementary and middle school, and practice and evaluate students’ progress.

This experience taught me many things about being in an environment with kids who have a disability, but the best thing I learned from this experience was that patience is one of the major keys to success.

I volunteered at Cool Water Kids from May 2019 – March 2020. It is a based church organization at a church called Victory Worship Center in Tucson, Arizona. It was my first experience in the US since I just moved in to continue my studies. It taught me a lot about the beauty of diversity. It was that experience that has risen my curiosity to work in more diverse environment.

I had my first internship in the U.S at the Haitian Association of Indiana (HAI) as the assistant director, from May 2020 - to August 2020. HAI is a local organization that supports immigrants, especially Haitian immigrants. During this internship, I was one of the immigrant helpers for the Caribbean at the Immigrant Welcome Center in Indianapolis. I was engaged and guided immigrants as they joined the Indianapolis community. Interacted with people from Haiti, Cuba, Salvador, and Kenya; served as pointed contact speaking languages such as French and Creole; and assisted families who lost their jobs during the pandemic. It was in the middle of the pandemic, so this experience came with many challenges. But overall it truly gave me a large idea of what I want to do in minority communities in the future as well as given me more ideas about the needs, especially the health care needs of those people.

I worked as a teaching assistant at the IUPUI Center for Young Children (CYC) which is a daycare from 2020- 2021. I assist the teacher with classroom responsibilities. I also interact with different age groups from toddlers through 5 years old providing a positive learning environment. Working with these kids has increased my organization and communication skills, but most of all conflict management skills.
