This project specifically enabled me to develop my academic and professional skills in two particular ways. First, this project required a good amount of research in order to make sure that my campaign was well informed in the most up to date way. I spent many hours working to make sure that my information was accurate and factual which helped me gain the skill of discerning what information is useful and what is not as well as how to synthesize that information. The other skill that I was able to grow in as a result of this project was my communication skills. I needed to group my research together in a way that could be presented to and understood by an audience. It was important for me to consider that my audience would not necessarily be well-informed of some of the topics which I was presenting. Because of that it was important to communicate technical content in an easily digestible way, which was a skill that I had to work on over the course of this project.
My intention in completing this project started out as a way to benefit my own growth in my academic journey. I felt that it would be a good learning opportunity and a way to advance my own skills as a student towards becoming a professional. However, as I completed this project I discovered something far more along the way. Breast cancer, and cancer in general, is something that will touch a majority of people's lives at some point along the way, but that does not mean we have to be powerless to it. There are ever advancing methods to help prevent, treat, and cure cancer of all types. As I was researching, I discovered that I can be a part of that as well. Bringing awareness to this issue does more than just educate people; it can be a life saving measure that can help catch breast cancer early. Overall, this project helped me to develop my own skills as an academic but more so realize my own place and purpose in the world of public health, something that I will not easily forget.
