Our tissue bank aspires to use normal breast tissues from donors to study breast tissue before it becomes cancerous. The purpose of the KTB is to allow researchers to understand what starts cancer so that eventually, they can prevent it. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the US. According to the CDC, around 255,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in the US. It's not hard to see why researchers are trying to find a cure for breast cancer when the impact it has on populations–. especially minority women, are severe. Black, Asian and Hispanic women experience breast cancer differently from White women. Black women develop aggressive forms of breast cancer that result in their highest rate of cancer death. Asian women have a higher risk of developing breast cancer in the US than in Asian countries.
Thus, the KTB encourages biological females of all ages [18+] and all backgrounds to donate breast tissue. Researchers use these samples to study the cells, the genetic makeup, and the environmental effects that lead to breast cancer. KTB provides researchers the opportunity to start at the root of the problem.
Listen to multiple women from different backgrounds explain why tissue donating is essential; especially for minority women.
