Sophomore at IUPUI
Biology B.A and a minor in Public Health
CPR Certified
Pre-med
When I started applying to college, I had to take into account the many science majors offered. After taking everything in consideration, talking to my advisors, and researching, I found my major. I chose Biology as my major because of the many career options that are available from the degree. Biology is a well-rounded science major that is perfect for Pre-med. Rather than focusing all on one aspect of science, I can touch upon everything and gain knowledge that will be useful in my medical career.
Biology has been an interest of mine since high school. I find understanding the many components that make up the human body fascinating. The different courses provided here at IUPUI touch upon the many aspects of biology; such as cell biology, microbiology, and genetics. Where all these classes are pretty similar, it amazes me how each course can dig into a specific level of biology that in turn plays a huge role in our life. Just learning about the basic mechanics of our body makes me want to dig deeper and understand all the fundamental roles each particle, organism, and cell has.
When it comes to teamwork, my extroverted personality allows me to communicate and collaborate with others easily. As a team member, I tend to use my leadership skills to help my team get our work done efficiently and precisely. In team settings, I work to help my team members with any obstacles. Throughout my internship, I utilized my teamwork skills to prepare projects and overcome obstacles. I work well with others in groups or on my own; when working with others, I aim to have everything on the same page with my team before starting with my tasks. As a team member, it is important I can accept criticism and give my opinions.
I have had experience working with others in various courses and programs through high school and university. My work experience as a catering manager has also made an impact on my teamwork skills. Through my experiences, I have learned to become reliable, hard-working, and can manage time. In all my experiences, I have gotten tasks completed on time efficiently with my team. I always keep things organized by writing notes or using a planner to stay on track with deadlines.
Throughout my internship, I have learned skills that I will take into the professional setting. Skills such as writing emails with proper language and communicating with different levels of hierarchy in the work setting and respecting confidential documents such as patient information. As a professional going into health care, it was essential that I had the opportunity to practice these skills and learn about them before going into the field I want.
For the past couple of years, I have been volunteering with the St. Vincent’s Breast Cancer Art Studio. Throughout the years, I have obtained experience that has allowed me to collaborate with and lead others. My position at the art studio consisted of helping organize the art supplies, paper/applications, aiding cancer patients in activities, and being able to welcome patients. The experience that I have gained will help me greatly in my future career by providing me with the skills needed to collaborate with my team and work with patients.
By volunteering at the art studio, I have become confident with working and communicating with patients from all races and backgrounds. My previous experience illustrates my capability of handling work in a patient to a professional setting. I was able to work well with the patients at the art studio by showing them respect and trust, which enriched me with their trust and comfort. As stated before, I have learned how to work with patients from the front. I provide a welcoming and pleasant attitude that will allow for a smooth connection between us. I have organizational skills that will be used to file patient information, new applications, and any paperwork that my position may require.
In addition, I acquire the communication skills needed to provide any answers or information a patient has. The skills I obtained in my previous role at the art studio will transcribe to my career and internship by proving me the skills I need to fulfill my duties.
Throughout my experiences, I have learned that I don't enjoy working as a cashier. Although I am flexible when it comes to different activities of job responsibilities. I enjoy working on tasks by myself or with a group. I don't like working face to face with customers that are hard and unresponsive. I like being part of a team and I enjoy the different tasks and responsibilities seen in office or clinical settings.
I worked at an Indian restaurant called Biryani House for 3 years while in high school. I worked part-time as a waitress and catering manager. Through my positions, I found the experience I needed to make connections with customers and potential clients.
As a catering manager, I consistently supervise and demonstrate to my coworkers how to successfully excel in their roles as waitresses and as catering staff. I was able to incorporate my team’s ideas and exhibit them to our clients.
As a hospitality worker, I was responsible for engaging in consistent and professional communication with both customers and coworkers. I had learned to work with customers and clients and help them understand specific items or situations.
The communication and collaboration skills I have gained through these positions can be fully transcribed in the medical career I pursue. Working with patients and my co-workers will come second hand to me.
Wedding reception my team and I assisted in setting up and managing the food service.

I am the Public Relations Officer at Women4Change IUPUI Chapter. I manage the communication through our social media, create and advertise our events and update the public with various news. My main task is to increase engagement and attendees at our events, fundraisers, and meetings.
For the past year, I have been a mentor for incoming freshmen through the 21st Century Scholars Program. This program helps students complete their scholarship requirements. As a mentor, I worked with students to help them transition from high school to college. By facilitating group sessions and having 1:1 meetings, I was able to help students achieve their career, academic and personal goals.
The skills and strengths I bring as a mentor include communication, collaboration, dedication, and encouragement. As a mentor, I have made sure to communicate with my peers and mentees on any updates or concerns.
I have collaborated with my peers and partner to effectively deliver an informative group session. My dedication to this role has allowed me to stay on top of all the group sessions, answer questions and provide times for my mentees outside of the designated hours.
My encouragement skills have helped my mentees believe in themselves and obtain the help they need to successfully have a good transition and academic year.
I volunteer at the IU Student Outreach Clinic on the East side of Indy through the VIDA organization. The IU- SOCis a free student-run clinic that provides neighbors in medically underserved communities access to healthcare.
The volunteer position I have is the front desk volunteer. My responsibilities consist of checking patients in and out, creating new patient logs, scanning patient information, and communicating with other partners (medicine, nurses, OT, PT, legal work, pharmacy, and social work) to ensure effective care for patients.
The skills I have gained through this position have allowed me to apply and become a clinic manager. The clinical exposure and patient interactions have taught me so much. These experiences and skills will be used in my future career and fortunately I have had the chance to practice them.
Since high school, I have been involved with the MICI AHEC programs. The Health Careers Opportunities Program strives to increase diversity in the health field through underserved/disadvantaged individuals in Marion county. At 16, I attended a summer program to expose myself to different health careers, networks, and academic success.
At beginning of my college career, I became an Ambassador for the HCOP program through UIndy. This program allows me to expand and grow as a professional through various duties. I work on my career and personal goals and networking opportunities.
Since February, I have started volunteering at the campus Greenhouse with the Biology Club. Our main tasks are to prepare, grow, and set up the plants that eventually will be sold in the Biology Club Plant Sale. Unlike the other organizations I volunteer and am involved in, the greenhouse is a personal gain for me. I have loved plants for quite a while and the idea to sit in peace with them excites me.
The greenhouse itself is an enchanting serenity that gives me a chance to relax and focus on myself. My future career pathway will be filled with lots of stress and running around. Working with plants allows me to take a deep breath and focus on the present. Knowing I can volunteer at the greenhouse motivates me to stay on top of my classes and commitments.
