My Internship: INShape and Spire Wellness

P443 INShape IUPUI Personal Training

This experience was unique and eye-opening to say the least. In the midst of COVID-19 I was a personal training intern for an IUPUI staff member. Not only was this the first time I was an "official" personal trainer, giving weekly workout plans and training with them in real time for something besides a 5k, this was a virtual experience because of the pandemic. I learned a lot about myself as a trainer, I am effective yet easy going. I learned that life is too short to do things without having a little bit of fun. I believe while maintaining a professional manner, everyone should take a break and laugh a little.

I think some of my favorite moments throughout the training sessions with my client this semester was not only the amount of progress she gained, but the amount of confidence she gained as well. Throughout the sessions I noticed more and more her speech start to shift and she starting talking about how good she feels and how people were noticing how she has gotten stronger and her confidence level of trying new exercises, by the end she jumped right in and improved her body awareness. My client also lost inches around her arms and legs like she wanted, so it was very reassuring to me as a student that not only do I know what to do, I know how to apply it as well to get my clients the results they want.

6 word reflection

The six words I chose to reflect on my training experience this semester were "learning, adapting, flexible, confident, educating, enjoyable." I chose these words because I felt as if each word represented a week in the training experience. At first, not only is the client learning about me and learning new habits, but I am learning about my client and how to communicate the science that is needed. I began to adapt over time and learned to be flexible because sometimes things will change and I had to be able to work on the spot. I began to get more confident in my clients ability to reach her goals as well as my ability to do my job as a personal trainer. I began educating my client on overall healthy practices for her life outside of our training sessions that she can take on with her once our sessions were over and I really started enjoying my practice and left feeling very accomplished.

Spire Wellness- External Internship

For my internship at Spire Wellness, I helped with a variety of tasks. I led a 15-minute virtual stretch break for employees of the companies that Spire Worked with, there were different times for different companies. I also led group fitness classes of many varieties and had a one-on-one client who needed some wellness coaching. I took attendance in the Bright Line Eating meetings, as well as followed up with the discussion threads posted about the reading assignments clients were assigned. Lastly, like these examples I updated many different spreadsheets with company data, this example has no company name or identifying data for the privacy of the company. The middle artifact is a health coaching document I created when interviewing a client with information needed as well as infographics, I created to help the client understand the basics of weight loss. The other artifact is a back-to-basics PowerPoint made in partner with the other intern at the time to present to a company on health and wellness basic habits.
