My Experiences

Bepko Academic Mentor

A position that I'm fortunate to have is being a Bepko Academic Mentor for IUPUI's Structural Kinesiology class. I co-teach the lab portion of this class with a TA, and we plan structured activities to help the students identify many of the bones, joints, landmarks, muscles, and ligaments in the human body along with their functions and movements. Additionally, I hold office hours for the students in this course who might need extra help, a strong support system, or even just a trustworthy peer to talk to. My favorite part of this position is when I help a student with something they're struggling with and they begin to be more successful. I've learned a lot about how to be a confident leader, a good role model, and how to teach and instruct others. All three of these skills are ones that I will need in my future career. Overall, my biggest goal in life is to help others and fortunately I've been able to do this as a mentor. I'm looking forward to continuing this goal when I become a physical therapist someday and use my knowledge to help those that are injured.

Class 5k

On April 11, 2022 I joined my classmates and some of their pets:) in running a 5k on the canal walk in downtown Indianapolis! In the class Theory and Practice of Cardiovascular Exercise we learned about exercise physiology and the cardiovascular system, how to properly endurance train, how to create a cardio workout and teach it to a fitness class, and much more! I loved this class because not only did we learn about these important concepts, but we put them to practice by training for a 5k together.

Quick Cardio and Core

On March 7, 2022 my classmate and I taught a fitness class at the Boner Fitness and Learning Center. This was an opportunity given to us in the class Theory and Practice of Cardiovascular Exercise. We observed the fitness class the week prior to teaching it and developed our own workout to teach. The workout we created is shown to the right. We made sure to have an effective warm up that would include dynamic movements that mimicked the main exercises. The fitness class was called "Quick Cardio and Core" so we performed many cardio and core based exercises in the form of a HIIT workout with three sets. Each set was completed twice. We ended with a cool down which consisted of multiple static stretches for the muscles that were used in the workout. This experience taught me how to manage a group of adults who are motivated to be active. I had a lot of fun creating this workout with my friend Sam and completing it at the center while providing positivity, encouragement, and modifications as needed.

Career Action Plan

In the Fall semester of 2020 I took the class Introduction to Exercise Science, and one of my projects was to complete this Career Action Plan Assignment shown to the left. I answered a variety of questions that prompted me to do research on my future career, budgeting, my strengths and weaknesses, and much more. This assignment helped me reflect on why I am choosing this career and it helped me start to prepare for it.
