The primary aim of my internship site's research is to develop a more effective treatment for lymphedema, a condition associated with breast cancer characterized by swelling due to the accumulation of lymph fluid. This research is critical because current treatment options, including compression garments, exercise, and manual lymph drainage, are often inadequate or uncomfortable for many patients. During my tenure at the laboratory, I learned about the extreme sensitivity of mice to anesthesia, which was highlighted by the unfortunate demise of a mouse during a tail measurement procedure. This experience emphasized the necessity of careful handling and precise use of laboratory equipment, a practice I diligently adhered to by asking detailed questions whenever new equipment was introduced. Successfully mastering the lab technology represented a significant achievement for me. Furthermore, working with mice was a novel experience, and I am pleased to report a smooth adaptation process with minimal complications. However, one of the more challenging aspects of my role involved the euthanasia of mice. Initially, this responsibility proved to be too daunting, prompting me to delegate the task to a coworker. Despite my initial reservations, the unwavering support and understanding from my supervisor and colleagues provided a comfortable environment for me to eventually undertake and perform this task with their guidance. This supportive network has not only facilitated my technical skills and professional growth but also prepared me to take on further responsibilities as we approach the spring semester. The environment at my internship site has been instrumental in building my confidence and ability to handle complex and sensitive tasks effectively.
