Health Sciences

Major: Health Sciences

Certificate: Nutrition

I decided to major in health sciences mainly because of the various courses that make up the degree. Such as U.S. health care systems, health and wellness, aging and the older populations, disability and society, etc. I wanted to learn more about health care in general, rather than taking a majority of science courses. Getting certified in nutriton is to fill my specific interest in food and how it affects everything about ourselves.

My experiences and skills

LHSI has been an amazing oppertunity for me to start experiencing what it would be like to work in the clincial field. Before LHSI my work experience was limited to working at Kroger (where I have been for almost three years), taking Easter and Christmas photos at malls, and the occassional baby sitting and pet sitting. Although these oppertunities have provided me with valube knowledge and skills, such as patience, how to comfort people, communicating with people who speak different languages, responsiblilty, problem solving, etc., I could not see any of the jobs as my future career. Working with Dr. Reinoso in the many clinics associated with Eskanazi Health has exposed me to such a diverse patient population that need help in some way or another. Listening and trying to connect patients with resources to help them as been extremely rewarding.

This semster I am also apart of OTEAM, which is a team of students at IUPUI who act as peer mentors for an assigned first year seminar (FYS) class. Twice a week I go to my freshman FYS class and am there to give them a student perspective on certain matters. I also meet with them invidually twice throughout the semster. This leadership position allows me to make sure students are adjusting to college life, are able to find a balance, have someone to guide and advise them, listen to them, and succeed.

I am very good with time management and exceeding the expectations others have for me. School is my number one priority but of course it is not my only priority and I have become quite skillful and efficient with how I spend my time.

 Teamwork

When working with others, most of the time I tend to naturally take the lead when everyone involved is of similar skill and has similar knowledge on the topic/project. I think that it is important for everyone in a group to be heard and make sure each person feels as though their imput is valued. I am able to combine ideas from many different people in order to create something that is organized, coherent, and easy to understand.
