I would like to learn how I can adapt my current knowledge and skills to my internship work and vice versa.
I aim to accomplish this goal by:
Building Excel spreadsheets
Talking and presenting to researchers and communicating via email
Learning gross anatomy, general histology, general pathology lesions, and general histology of all different types of neoplasia
I would like to learn how to effectively utilize lab equipment/techniques and learn how to work professionally in a lab setting.
I aim to accomplish this goal by:
Learning slide processing, slide reading skills (H&E), and immunostaining skills
Learning Aperio, Halo, and Leica microscope
Understanding basic stats to analyze and QC data
I would like to explore and understand more about pathology and learn about options I could pursue in the future.
I aim to accomplish this goal by:
Understanding gross vs. microscopic pathology
Analyzing studies, interpreting histology and immunostaining data, and using image analysis software
Discussing future options with my supervisor, Dr. Sandusky, and other lab workers
Current career and academic goals:
Currently, I would like to graduate with a bachelor's degree in Forensic and Investigative Science and Chemistry, along with a minor in Biology. From there, I am looking toward applying to medical school, with a specialty in forensic pathology. This would lead me to my career goal of becoming a forensic pathologist. While this is my first plan, I have also considered expanding my chemistry schooling instead by pursuing a master's or Ph.D. program. By doing this, I am not yet sure of what my career goal would be but I consider it an option because of my interest in chemistry.
Is this the right option for me?
I am not sure if what I am aiming for is the right option for me, which can be seen through having two different plans after completing my bachelor's program. While I have added an additional major and minor, chemistry and biology, since starting college, I believe these have been choices that allow me to push myself further and provide me with many potential future options. I have always pursued tasks that challenge me. When deciding on my major in college, I was initially between graphic design and forensic science. Two drastically different options. But given my mindset and goals for myself, I decided on something that would be difficult yet engaging. Even though I'm still not sure if I want to go to medical school or pursue chemistry, I know I am utilizing my skills in conjunction with my passions and taking advantage of the opportunities presented to me.
