The Regenstreif institute works to develop trends within public health records to determine how different diseases impact the Indiana population. Within the internship I am working with long-COVID data to produce a scoping review focusing on health care disparities in long-COVID patients in the United States.
The mission of the Regenstreif institute is to "develop, conduct and disseminate impactful scientific research in health systems and across communities" as a team member I have been able to help keep this mission going. I have done so by assisting in research that assesses where there is gaps in our health care systems and how that impacts the community around us. The scoping review that I conducted can help us better understand how to help individuals with long-COVID 19 in the United States.
The diversity of the Regenstreif institute has helped foster my ability to continue the mission of the institute. The institute brings together individuals from multiple different backgrounds and experiences to collaborate on one main goal. During this internship this environment has challenged me to think in many diverse ways and assess a situation from different angles. Each week I have attended meetings where we discuss the progress on my project and I receive constructive criticism and ideas on what I should change or complete next.
The diverse and collaborative work environment of the Regenstreif institute also assisted in my growth as an individual. The collaborative space has allowed me to work on my communication skills with others. I have been able to work on this skill by communicating my needs. I did so by asking questions when I had them whether that be in person or over an email. I have also been able to work on consisley communicating my thoughts. I have been able to learn this through the many weekly meetings that we have had where I have had to explain my process and my thinking behind my actions. The internship has also allowed me to work on my time management and grow in the ability to balance work, life and school. I have been able to learn how to do this through having a flexible schedule and a workplace that has supported both my school and professional work.

Findings from a Scoping Review: Healthcare disparities within long-COVID 19 patients in the United States
This LHSI internship has allowed me to work within the Center for Biomedical Informatics at the Regenstrief Institute. At this center they are working alongside the CDC, Indiana University, the VA, and Marion County Public Health department in research on long COVID-19. During this internship I completed a scoping review that focused on healthcare disparities and long-COVID 19. Healthcare disparities are defined as factors that impact an individual’s access to healthcare, the presence of disease in different populations, or health outcomes. This research is important as 1 in 13 adults who have survived COVID-19 suffer from long term symptoms and the severity differs among different populations.
