Internship Goals

Learning Goal #1: Gain experience with clients/patients.

What tasks, responsibilities, projects, or activities will you do to meet this goal?

1. Observing a clinical psychologist perform K-SADS.

2. Observing study visits.

3. Observing language used when making home visits.

I have not worked on this goal yet due to where we are at in recruitment. However, I have witnessed a phone screening for a potiential canidate and that was very beneficial.

Learning Goal #2: Gain an understanding for data analysis in research.

What tasks, responsibilities, projects, or activities will you do to meet this goal?

1. Understanding how the software works and its relation to the study.

2. Organize data to keep the information in accessible places.

3. Reading information on VR feedback to determine which VR will help with data.

I have worked on this goal! I know how virtual reality works a lot more than I ever originally did. I also know how to organize data using excel better and Dr. Hummer has been very gracious in helping me learn those skills.

Learning Goal #3: Gain a deeper understanding of the field of psychology.

What tasks, responsibilities, projects, or activities will you do to meet this goal?

1. Observe the roles of each of my superiors in the research environment.

2. Gain a better understanding of what ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorder are.

3. Ask questions to gain a deeper understanding in areas where I lack knowledge.

I have asked Dr. Hummer countless of questions and he is always very understanding with a response. He has helped me gain a better understanding of the field of psychology and by observing him I have learned a lot more. I look forward to learning more when patient visits start happening.

Career Goals

My current career goal is to apply to a clinical psychology doctorate program and get my PhD. I would like to work in pediatrics and work in a hospital. I want to be a clinical psychologists because I want to help people who have mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders and help them in any way I can. I also think that this is a very highly growing field, as it should be, due to people embracing mental health awareness. I am not 100% fully positive about this career path, but it is very important to me. To make sure I am sure of this decision, I have joined this lab with LHSI and I plan to volunteer in a hospital position that hopefully deals with mental health. I have been looking online to hopefully add a position for the spring.

My goals have more or less stayed the same from when I started my process with LHSI. I still have a desire to become a clinical psychologist, but the only hold up on that thought happened when I added my second major and minor. I added an English with a concentration in creative writing major and a film minor. I do have a desire to pursue  writing as well so it'll come down to be having to do some deep reflection. In regards to my preparation on becoming a clinical psychologist, I need to start studying for my GRE and taking steps towards that process. In the spring, I plan on creating a list of schools I want to apply to, studying for the GRE, and then taking the GRE. By the end of the year, I want to have applied to all of my graduate school options.

This summer I plan to apply to internships in Cleveland. I would love to shadow clinical psychologists at the Cleveland Clinic and spend time volunteering in the hospital. Next fall I plan on completing my psychology capstone, which will give me some experience with psychology in a different atmosphere. I also plan on volunteering at IU Health throughout my senior year to get some experience.

My internship has changed what I want for my job. As much as I love conducting research and trying to solve an issue in the world, I do not think I want to do that as my job anymore. I need to be stimulated by people everyday because I think that is when I do my best work. I like working alone as well, but I do rely on collaboration to get my thoughts out there.

I am not 100% confident in my self-knowledge to make a career decision at this moment. I am a double major in Psychology and English, which makes it hard because I am very passionate about both areas. I plan on applying to graduate schools for both Psychology and English because I would rather have more options than not enough.
