My name is Alex Stocker and my pronouns are she/her. I am a junior double majoring in psychology and English with a concentration in creative writing and minoring in film. My goal is to get my PhD in clinical psychology and work with children. My internship site works with children with ADHD and we study that using virtual reality. I am also a member of the women's socer team at IUPUI!
I chose psychology because I am interested in what makes people the what that they are. Everyone has such unique distinctions about themselves and that fact fascinates me. I chose a major in English with a concentration in creative writing because I enjoy writing stories and learning how to write efficiently. I like to be creative in my writing and it has always been a dream of mine to write stories. I chose a minor in film because I am passionate about the film industry and I enjoy learning how movies/tv shows are created.
My strengths in a team are flexibility, patience, a willingness to be creative and bounce ideas off of others, communication, outgoingness, and a hard work ethic.
My work experience to date includes working as a youth soccer coach, a social media assistant, and an intern with LHSI. My soccer team and I also volunteer regularly at organizations in the Indianapolis area. My favorite volunteer activity that we have done to date is helping with the STAR soccer program. The STAR soccer program works with special needs children to help them participate in soccer games! I have loved my time with these children because they always put a smile on my face when I am around them! I am also a member of SAAC at IUPUI, which stands for student-athlete advisory committee. We help make decisions for the NCAA on behalf of the student athletes at IUPUI. All of these experiences have helped me become a hard working, dedicated, collaborative, and passionate person. I care about the organizations I work for and I am very thankful for the opportunities.
Some of the skills I already have is a hard working mentality, a desire for teamwork, good organizational skills, time management capabilities, friendliness, and the ability to take constructive criticism. My experiences thus far have instilled these values within me that I take to every opportunity I can. Some tasks that I know I don't enjoy yet is confrontational situations or when there are loose deadlines. I like knowing when items need to be done by because I am a generally busy person so if I know when items are due I can be better planned.
My experience at the lab in the fall was very fulfilling. I worked with excel in depth for the first time and I learned how to insert data, analyze charts, and create databases. I also worked very closely with the virtual reality builds and learned how to download the actual builds onto the virtual reality headsets. I also learned how busy life can be with a job, school, and soccer. I mention that because it made me have to time manage even more and I got a taste of what the working world may feel like. Currently, I am learning how to use EndNote and cite references by using that in word. I am also preparing to help with recruiting participants for our study.
