As I wrap up my Health Sciences capstone course at IU Indianapolis, I've taken time to reflect on how far I've come both personally and professionally. When I first entered the program, my understanding of healthcare was limited mostly to clinical settings. Through IU's integrative Health Sciences curriculum, I've developed a broader view, one that connects patient care to public health, policy, culture, and equity. The program helped me recognize that health is shaped by more that just biology; it is infulenced by environment, access to resources, education, and social systems. This shift in perspective has been one of the most transformative parts of my academic journey.
One of the key moments in my devleopment came through the research and presentation of my group capstone project, which focused on gestational diabetes in women aged 20-30 in the United States. This topic stood out to me not only for its medical relevance but also for its deep connection to maternal health disparities, especially among young women, and young women in underserved populations. Researching this topic requires me to think critically about the barriers young women face in accessing prenatal care, the role of nutrition and education, and the systemic issues that contribute to poor health outcomes. The project pushed me to analyze data, evaluate public health policy and initiatives, and consider how social determinants of health play a signficant role in materal and child health.
Through this and other experiences in the program, I've grown into a stronger communicator, problem solver, and critical thinker. IU Indianapols gave me a chance to engage in meaningful disucssions, collaborate on group projects, and connect with the local community through service-learning. I've learned how to express complex health topics in a way that is clear, accessible, and empathetic. The emphasis on cultural humility and health literacy throughout the program has changed how I approach health care, not just as a future provider, but as an advocate for patient empowerment and education.
Like many students, I faced my share of challenges like: balancing coursework with personal responsibilities, navigating research hurdles, and sometimes doubting my own abilities. What helped me push through was the supportive environment that I have at home and through IU Indianapolis. My professors were encouraging and knowledgable, and I found peers who were just as passionate and driven. These relationships, along with campus resources, helped me stay focused and determined.
The capstone experience helped me refine my career goals in ways I didn't expect. While I came into the program interested in clinical care, I am deeply drawn to public health and culutral humility. I am especially passionate about addressing disparities in health care and advocating for early intervention, access to resources, and health education. Whether I pursue graduate studies or begin an accelerated nursing program, I know this program has prepared me to make a meaningful impact.
Moving forward, I plan to apply the knowledge and skills I gained at IU Indianapolis to advocate for more equitable and effective healthcare systems. I want to continue learning, through research, continuing education, and hands-on experiences, and contribute to programs that are advocating for vulnerable populations. This program didn't just teach about healthcare, it shaped my purpose as future health care professional.
