My experience with Bonner Leaders has been enlightening. Some of my responsibilities that I have held throughout my time in the program have been: building stronger relationships within the community, engaging in impactful service work, and developing leadership skills. I participated in a variety of service projects, and built a stronger relationship with my community partner.
The projects that I have engaged in, whether it be in a group setting or with my individual community partner, were: making homemade blankets for children, setting up different volunteer projects (dog toys out of old clothes, making overdose kits, homemade cards for children in the hospital) for my community partner, the white river clean up, painting at Westminster, helping out the zoo for the annual zoo-boo, and the list goes on.
These service projects have a dual impact on both the community and my personal growth. Each project had a positive impact on the community, from providing comfort to children in need, reducing waste and benefiting animal shelters, to improving the local environment, contributing to a cleaner and safer community space, and addressing public health by promoting harm reduction and potentially saving lives.
These projects have also contributed to my personal growth in a significant way. Working directly or indirectly with vulnerable populations (children, animals, those affected by overdose and homelessness) establishes emotional intelligence and a deeper sense of empathy. Coordinating volunteer projects of my own has helped develop my leadership and project management skills. Most importantly, these projects have deepened my connection to the community, and has given me a purpose and belonging.
Participating in service learning has enriched my academic journey by integrating real-world experience with classroom theory, offering unique opportunities for personal growth. Service learning allows you to apply concepts from class, such as management or rhetorical strategies, in real-life situations. I have gained hands-on leadership experience by managing volunteer efforts and working with diverse groups. Service learning encourages you to take initiative and collaborate across different parts of the community. Overall, I have gained a sense of civic duty and social awareness that is difficult to develop solely in a classroom. Engaging in community-driven projects helps you understand the societal impact of our actions and the importance of contributing positively to your community. These experiences help build a well-rounded skill set, combining academic knowledge with emotional and practical life skills, which will be beneficial in both my academic career and future occupation.
Engaged learning opportunities like service learning offer so many benefits to students, even those who may not initially be aware of or inclined to participate in them. Many students don’t realize how valuable the skills gained in service learning are for their future careers. It teaches leadership, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving in ways that go beyond the typical classroom. Service learning will challenge students to step out of their comfort zones, building confidence, and empathy- qualities that are not always cultivated in traditional academic settings but are essential for success in life. Engaging with the community through service learning helps students develop a sense of social responsibility and belonging. It allows them to connect with local issues, contribute meaningfully to society, and see the impact they have on the world around them.
For students who are hesitant, I would say: Start small. You don’t have to commit to large, intimidating projects right away. Even a small service learning opportunity can be incredibly rewarding and can help you ease in larger commitments. Service learning provides experience that can’t be replicated in a classroom. It’s a chance to learn by doing, which leads to the greatest personal satisfaction and professional growth. Not only are you helping others, but you are also developing skills and insight that will benefit you academically, personally, and professionally. You’l feel more fulfilled knowing your actions make a real difference.
