Goals reflection- LHSI application vs. Halfway through the internship

So far, I have learnt a lot of background about neuropathology and many neurodegenerative disorders. I have also observed for the very first time what research is really about: asking questions and problem solving. I used to think that research is very slow and does not involve too much variety, but thankfully I have been proven wrong. I was surprised by the significance of the little discoveries which eventually add up to a big theory. There is never a same day at my lab, there is a slightly different case, different dissection, and a different diagnosis. I have learned what I wanted which was an understanding of research and a deeper understanding of neuroscience and the field of medicine. Comparing my responses on the application to my goals currently there is not much difference. The only thing I would amend would be the other activities that I would like to pursue. During the application, I had a very long list of opportunities I wanted to pursue, I still would like to do as many of those as possible but I want to dedicate myself towards a few. I want to shadow physicians and volunteer in a medical as well as community based organizations.

My career goals remain the same as well, I have a better understanding of the medical field and medical research. My research experience is certainly helping me reach my post- undergraduate goals. I have developed as a critical thinker and a problem solver. I have learned to evaluate data and scientific writing to apply it to scenarios I have at hand. I have also become more observant and patient which a key skill for the medical field. Outside the lab, I also read a lot of scientific articles to fill the gaps in my knowledge. The more answers I find, new questions come up and the process repeats again! I would like to spend more time at my lab to learn more but with the hectic online and in person class juggling occupied the majority of my time this semester. Next semester and maybe over the summer I would love to spend more time with them to learn more about research.
