Using the Bioethics primer, our class discussed how the movie Gattaca (1997) tackles todays ethical issues, for instance the 4 core perspectives - Autonomy, Beneficence, non-maleficence and Justice. Which autonomy and beneficence came up a lot during this discussion, along with the religious objections and the unintended consequences. Although I wasn't an active speaker, I still listened to my peers and when summoned, said everything I had to say linking back to the movie and its characters and creating an argument that in the movie it is the imperfect who are truly perfect.
Overall, the movie's main ethical dilemma presents a world where a person's worth is determined by their genetic makeup rather than their ambitions and personality preferences. There is injustice, discrimination, and deception since genetic engineering humans is wrong. Thus, If everyone were the same, life would be extremely dull and monotonous. Our DNA would also be "connected." If someone died from sickness, everyone would most certainly die from it as well because everyone would be the same, thus diminishing the population.
