Role on Project = PI.
Project: In this study we will use survey-based methods to examine what health behaviors and outcomes friends in alternative schools are similar on, and if similarities in social determinants of health and academic outcomes are also occurring. The extent peer influence results in similarities among friends will be tested. Health behaviors will include the use of tobacco products, marijuana and/or synthetic cannabis, methamphetamine (meth), and opioids. The health outcomes include mental health, Body Mass Index (BMI), and food security status. The social determinants of health include whether the student has stable housing, and the students’ primary mode of transportation. Academic outcomes, including Grade Point Average (GPA) and intention to go on to university will also be included
Objectives: To examine which health behaviors were similar among friends, and identify social relationships and behavioral factors believed to influence early healthcare decisions and health outcomes.
Results:
Mental health and tobacco and alcohol use
Currently in the peer-review process
Background: Alternative high school students typically have worse mental health, and higher rates of tobacco and alcohol use, than traditional high school students. This study examines how tobacco and alcohol use, which may be used as potential coping mechanisms for poor mental health in alternative high schools, are associated with student mental health.
