New paper published. This study examined variability in four different methods of calculating moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) among older adults, as well as lifestyle correlates of physical activity. The results demonstrate the wide variability possible in reporting methods for accelerometry data and their relation to adherence rates for national health recommendations.

We had a great "Acute Disaster Response & Preparedness" Workshop with first responders, healthcare professionals and healthcare students from eastern Idaho at the Idaho State University Disaster Response Complex (DRC). Our MPH graduate student (Meesha Iqbal) was the lead for this seminar. This was a great example of collaboration between ISU's Community & Public Health, Civil & Environmental Engineering, and Continuing Education and Workforce Training. We had speakers from Southeastern Idaho Public Health, Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, and Idaho National Laboratory. Hear more about Meesha's background and the event here, and read more and about the event here.

Congratulations to Sowmya Natarajan for winning the best poster presentation prize in the category of "Health, Nutrition, & Clinical Sciences" at ISU's Graduate Research Symposium. Sowmya presented the project she has been working on for MPH 5599.
Congratulations to Dr. Meesha Iqbal for winning the best oral presentation in the category of "behavioral and social sciences" at ISU's Graduate Research Symposium. Meesha presented the results of a secondary data analysis of the PDHS (national survey of Pakistan) that determined the variation in prevalence of domestic violence across the four provinces of Pakistan, and how domestic violence was associated with different cultures, norms and traditions.
Congratulations to Dr. Meesha Iqbal for also being a runner-up for the ISU student employee of the year.
Congratulations to Sarah Hibbert for being awarded a summer INBRE fellowship. Sarah will continue her work looking at food insecurity, living expenses, dietary quality, and mental health.
Funding has been obtained to examine the social network of alternative high school students, and how peers are associated with different health behaviors and outcomes.
New paper published. This paper examined how bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol S (BPS) were associated with dietary behaviors and poor health outcomes. Healthier dietary quality and several HEI subgroups were related to lower urinary BPA concentrations; no significant (P ≤ 0.0005) findings were observed for BPF and BPS.

College students tend to have friends who share their alcohol use behavior, the reason why this similarity occurs was examined in this newly released publication. Strong evidence of peer influence on weekly alcohol use and binge drinking was found, and friendships were more likely to form among students with the same alcohol use behavior (e.g., non-drinkers were most likely to befriend non-drinkers). Alcohol use was associated with friendships ending, which may be due to problems associated with alcohol use.
