The Cagayan Valley Small Ruminant Research Center (CVSRRC) is one of the R&D Centers of Isabela State University. Started as Student Instructional Unit of the College of Agriculture in early 2000, the center expanded its services not only to students but to farmers and now, entrepreneurs.
By virtue by ISU Board of Regents in 2010, the center was established to lead R&D activities towards improvement of small ruminant industry in Region 02. Goat and sheep raising in Cagayan Valley has been recognize as one of the integral component of livestock production activities of farmers. The core mission of the center is to transform small ruminant raising from subsistence level of production into sustainable livestock-based enterprise.
Today, CVSRRC became the house of different technologies which are vital to attain sustainability. Among these technologies include artificial insemination (AI) which was introduced as an alternative option over natural mating. In support to AI, the center established its own semen processing laboratory, developed a semen extended formulation specific for goat and adopted cryopreservation techniques that are proven effective and efficient in preserving gametes. Moreover, retailing scheme was also introduced to improve product disposal. Among the products developed in support to this initiative are ready-to-eat chevon in cans and chevon prime cuts in vacuum-packs. With this development, the center has developed the Philippine National Standard on hygienic goat slaughtering and chevon cutting to support commercialization of the products.
In 2017, the center was named as one of the Technology Business Incubators (TBI) under the agricultural sector. With the incubation program, several mature technologies of the center were introduced and transferred to entrepreneurs for commercial-scale production.
The Cagayan Valley Small Ruminants Research Center shall provide R&D/E framework that will support the application of technologies to transform goat and sheep raising from a subsistence type of farm activity into a viable livestock-based enterprise thus ensuring higher income in rural areas.
The Cagayan Valley Small Ruminants Research Center shall take the lead in the conduct of research and extension activities to promote sustainable goat and sheep-based enterprise designed to improve rural farming activities.
1. Laboratories
Semen processing Laboratory
The semen processing laboratory caters collection, processing and storage of goat semen. The laboratory is equipped with Computer Aided Sperm Analyzer for more efficient evaluation of sperm cells performance for further processing, storage and utilization using AI. The laboratory became operational since 2009.
Embryo Transfer Laboratory
The embryo transfer (ET) laboratory was established in 2018 to maximize the potential of female breeders. With ET, more eggs will be harvested using multiple ovulation technique. Likewise, using the sperm cells of superior breeder bucks, purebred animals can be produced at a faster rate.
Integrated Slaughterhouse
The integrated slaughterhouse was established in support to the development of Philippine National Standards on hygienic goat slaughtering and chevon cutting, however, it caters slaughtering of small and large animals. The facility is an AA accredited slaughterhouse by National Meat Inspection Services, thus, products produced can be distributed across the country.
Meat Processing Laboratory
The meat processing laboratory caters processing of various meat products including chevon, pork and beef. The facility is an accredited food processing under the Food and Drug Administration. The laboratory can also produce products in various forms including can, vacuum pack and retort pouch.
2. Trainings
Artificial Insemination for small ruminant
The training course covers lecture on reproductive physiology, hands-on activities on semen handling, assessment of in-heat does, and insemination.
Forage production
The training is composed nursery and field production of forages (both legume trees and grasses). The trainees will undergo hands-on activities from seed bed preparation, transplanting, field preparation, planting, fertilizer, pest and diseases management and harvesting.
Farmer Livestock School on Goat Enterprise Management (FLS-GEM)
The Farmer Livestock Scholl on Goat Enterprise Management or FLS-GEM is a 30-week comprehensive training on science-based goat production developed by DOST-PCAARRD. FLS-GEM covers training from community assessment, goat production management and enterprise management related to goat. The training will be facilitated by a trained and accredited facilitator from SUCs, DA and LGUs.
