How can a student see his/her counselor? 

Students can stop by before school, during their Advisory, or lunch to schedule an appointment. A digital request form is also available on this website and the grade level guidance classrooms. Additionally, counselors may meet with a student based upon parent and/or teacher request. 

 

How can I monitor my child’s grades on tests, quizzes, and assignments?

IMS’ Teacher Gradebook is “live”, meaning you can view your child's grades as teachers post them throughout the quarter via the parent portal. Students also have access to their own student portal account.

 

I need assistance with the parent portal.

I'm not getting any notifications from the school or district.

As of the 2022-23 school year, all important announcements will be communicated with parents/guardians through "Parent Square". If you have not registered for Parent Square notifications, it is important that you do so ASAP. Please click here for information on how to register.

 

How can I arrange for a meeting with my child's teachers?

You're in the right place! Contact your child's counselor at (631) 650-8550, we would be happy to schedule a meeting for you.

 

How can I contact my child's teacher?

Parents/guardians may contact teachers via email or phone (contact IMS main office or guidance office). Teachers emails can be accessed under "Staff Directory" on the Middle School District site.


How do I find out about upcoming events at IMS?

Students should listen to the morning announcements in advisory, refer to the IMS Google Site and/or District Site, and follow our social media accounts to get notifications about upcoming events. 

 

Can a student join a club at any time throughout the year?

YES! We encourage students to try new clubs and activities. With a signed parent permission slip, students can attend a club at any point in the year. Click here to see all the clubs/activities IMS offers!

 

What interscholastic athletics are available for students?

How do I withdraw my child from Islip Middle School?

Please contact the main office at (631) 650-8500 for assistance with the withdrawal process.


My child no longer wants to participate in Band, Orchestra, and/or Chorus.

Please contact your child's teacher and school counselor for assistance.


When is extra help offered to students?

Students should reach out to their teacher(s) to see when extra help is being offered. Some teachers have extra help schedule for specific days throughout the year, and others offer extra help to students as needed. 


My child is struggling in a class and I would like to get him/her help, do you have suggestions for tutors?

The guidance department has a list of tutors available upon request. Please contact your child's school counselor for assistance.


What is the Renaissance Reward Program?

The Renaissance Reward Program is a quarterly student recognition program we have at IMS. Students are recognized for their hard work and good behavior. Click here to see the criteria for the program. This information is also available in your child's planner.


I have a question about schedule changes & special requests.

Parents/guardians will receive letter from Dr. Martin in January regarding scheduling and special requests for the following school year. Please note, specials requests must be submitted each year and we cannot guarantee any specific placements.


What is AIS?

AIS stands for Academic Intervention Services. Students may be recommended for AIS classes based on teacher recommendation, iReady scores, and/or report card grades. Students may receive AIS services in ELA and/or Math.


What are the requirements for Honors classes?

Students must meet certain criteria in order to be recommended for a Honors class: (1) Top 20% of grade in that particular subject, (2) At or above grade level iReady diagnostic test scores, (3) grade of 85 or higher on midterm (if applicable), and (4) Teacher recommendation. Additional information regarding requirements and the recommendation process will be shared with families mid-year.


What Honors classes are offered to students?

Students entering into 7th grade may be recommended for Science Honors. Students entering 8th grade may be recommended for Earth Science. All students at IMS are accelerated in Math.


Does my child have opportunity to be in Honors Mathematics?

Honors math begins in high school with Geometry. Students must obtain an 85 or higher on the Algebra regents and a teacher recommendation in order to meet criteria for this course.


What is Advisory?

Advisory is a 20 minute period that students attend each day. During this time, important announcements are made and students complete activities based on the theme for that month. Every Tuesday and Thursday is "Relax and Read", students should bring their R.E.D (read every day) book.


My child is absent from school, how can I request work?

After a certain number of absences in a row, parents/guardians may request work for their child. Please contact the guidance office and/or your child's teachers to begin this process. It is also important that parents/guardians contact our attendance office to notify the school that their child is absent from school.


My child is having technical difficulties with their school issued device.

Please email imstechsupport@islipufsd.org with your questions and concerns. Please include your child's name and grade in your email. 


How do I find out about regents & final exams?

Information about regents and final exams will be shared with families in June from the AP Office. Parents/guardians may also check the IMS Google Site for announcements and information.


How will I know if my child needs to attend summer school?

Once finals grades are calculated, parents/guardians of students who failed a class for the year (overall average of 64 or below) will be contacted by their child's teachers and school counselor.


How can I obtain working papers for my child?

Please have your child stop by the nurses office to pick up their working papers once they have reached the age of 14.
