Mr. Rod Gordon will be teaching the "Sporty's Learn to Fly" course. The course includes 18 hours of embedded videos that cover the subject material, short tests at the end of each section, and a final test at the end of the course. Mr. Gordon will play each video in class and stop in places to explain the video by drawing on the board or with the use of several large model airplanes he owns.
The class also includes an embedded computer-based flight simulator. These are useful in showing how to read the instruments in the cockpit. There are several scenarios in the simulator, including taking off, landing, and making steep turns. (Mr. Gordon will also show students how to download a free X-Plane on their smartphones.) This is a better simulator and is controlled by tilting or twisting your phone. The simulator has a great tutorial on how to control the aircraft in the simulator. The class setup will include simulation on a large interactive screen with a joystick throttle and foot pedals.
The class is 24 hours (4 hours per week for 6 weeks) with some "homework" to be completed outside of class. This should be enough time for students to complete the course and take the required tests. We are limiting the class size to not more than 28 students currently in 7th through 12 grades.
About Mr. Gordon:
"My background: I received a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University in flight and aircraft maintenance. It has a great reputation among hiring personnel at the airlines. I am an airline transport pilot and certified flight instructor, with certifications for multiple aircraft from single engine to multi engine turbo prop to several types of jets, including those with 'glass cockpits'. I flew large corporate jets to Europe, Asia, and North and Central America. I flew for the airlines out of Chicago's O'Hare Airport. I also flew large aircraft carrying overnight cargo for the US mail, UPS, and Federal Express, all over the US, and into Mexico. I have my aircraft mechanic's license (A&P) and FCC license for repairing the avionics on aircraft. Most of the aircraft I flew, I also repaired and maintained."
