Academic counseling consists of individual counseling sessions held one-on-one between the student and the counselor. During these sessions I speak to students about their grades in each of their classes and anything that is going on with them that might be hindering their success. We construct a plan together to help bring up their low grades. The plan often involves the student studying for a longer period of time, becoming more organized with their time, attending tutoring sessions after-school, and/or using different resources to help them learn the class material. If it is determined that they are performing poorly due to any social-emotional problem that they are experiencing, then they are referred to Ms. Ahed Abufeelat (the social-emotional counselor).
Academic Counseling in groups takes place during Advisory (half of lunch). I meet with students in middle school and high school at least once a week. During these meetings, we discuss how to succeed in school both academically and socially and how to succeed in any academic setting. The goal of Advisory is to help students improve their academic performance, succeed at every level of schooling, and get into the college of their choice. My Advisory schedule is listed below.
