XENOPHOBIA
Rejection and discrimination from outside the member group (essentially from the national membership group) is called xenophobia. Why do some people have problems getting in contact with people from other cultures?
One of the most frequent forms of xenophobia is based on race and is called racism. All racism involves xenophobia, but not the other way around. When someone of a minority race reaches a high economic levels and racism towards him weakens or dissapears, we say that rejection or discrimination on the basis of race was weaker than discrimination based on economic level or class, which is so prevalent within societies or groups.
Why are there prejudices against migrants?
The difficulties of definition derive from this questions which introduces forms of rejections to the alien who does not are necessarily ethic or similar, but involve economic discriminations, questions relating to ideology and political perspectives. Definitions accepted by international organizations, limit xenophobia to a whole of ethic issues, on which the international consensus today revolves.
Why are there prejudices against migrants?
The label of "discrimination", however, broadens the issue to include subjects such as women, sexual orientation, and others. The current trend is to include in a single appointment or claims relating to xenophobia, racism or discrimination, without there being a clear distinction between one thing and another.
What can be done to fight against xenophobia in daily life, but also in society, in school and by politicians?
We have to think that they are people like us and, though they have different cultures or beliefs, they won’t hurt us or do something bad to us. It’s just the opposite; they can give us so many good things. In school, we could be taught from a point of equality. The politicians could not be as selfish and think of other people as well.
