The changemaker movement is a global shift toward empowering individuals of all ages to recognize problems in their communities and take meaningful action to address them. The movement focuses on cultivating abilities such as empathy, teamwork, creative problem-solving, and leadership. At its core, the changemaker movement aims to create societies where solving problems is a shared responsibility, ultimately leading to more resilient and equitable communities.
The first international student changemaker conference was hosted at Frankfurt International School and has been growing and evolving ever since.
We have worked hard to provide a transparent, equitable and sustainable process for passing on the torch to the next school. While attending the Changemaker Conference is undoubtedly impactful for the individuals attending, hosting the Conference can positively impact the entire school community and culture.
5 Criteria When Considering Becoming a Host School
No Direct Repeat Hosts: our rationale for this criteria is that the process of hosting a changemakers conference can be transformative for a school community, and we want to open up this opportunity to other schools. Except in the circumstances that no other potential host schools step forward we would ask that previous host schools wait a minimum of two years before applying to host the conference again.
School Capacity: Schools must be able to host at least 200 external participants. We believe this size is critical to a vibrant conference. It is what enables a variety of workshops as well as networking opportunities for both adults and students alike.
Location should be within continental Europe: from a sustainability (emissions) perspective, we wish to minimize travel distances, and as the main constituents of this particular conference are located in Europe, it should be hosted by a school in continental Europe to minimize this travel distance. It is definitely possible that regional conferences could emerge, and a "Changemaker Conference Asia" or "Changemaker Conference Africa" could be created following this model of student ownership in the planning process.
New Host School must have attended at least 1 changemaker conference with Students: In order to host effectively, you need to know the structure and ethos of the conference, and you need to have student leaders who have experienced it firsthand. As students take a leading role in conference planning simply having had adults attend previous conferences is not sufficient.
When Possible, the Host Country should vary: This ensures the conference does not become the "German" conference and keeps cultural diversity at the center, leading to a more vibrant experience.
