Hi! My name is Katelyn Nordhues. I am the fifth grade science and social studies teacher. I am a Paynesville Schools Alumni - it is great to be back in Bulldog Country. I enjoy helping students ignite their natural curiosity and make connections between what they learn in school and real life. When I am not teaching, I love to be outside. I enjoy camping, hiking, gardening, and spending time with friends and family. My husband, Dylan, and I have two kids, Calvin (3) and Lucy (1). We also have two Australian Shepherds, Bella and Boomer.
I will be teaching Science for all of 5th grade. We will be covering Physical Science, Earth Science, and Life Science. We will learn about the Solar System, Motion and Forces, and basic biology. We typically complete a chapter every two weeks. Within each chapter, students will have vocabulary, short readings, and hands on learning opportunities. Chapters are wrapped up with either a test or a project.
I will be teaching most of the social studies content for 5th grade. In homerooms, until Power Math begins, we will be learning about the different regions of the United States and the Indigenous People who lived there before us. Once Power Math begins, I will teach Social Studies independently. We will switch between Science and Social Studies about every 2 weeks. Students will be learning about Native Americans, regions of the united states, early explorers, and early history of the United States.
We start with a check-in to gauge where students are at before I begin class.
Lessons are taught in various styles, presentations, discussions, reading from the textbook, inquiry based learning, and hands on experiences.
After the lesson, students get an opportunity to apply the knowledge they learned.
Before students leave class, they turn in an exit-ticket to check student understanding.
At the end of class, I double check if there are any questions or need for help.
Make Up Work and Retakes:
Students need to talk with me to catch up on any missing homework. They will be encouraged to refer to the 5th Grade Calendar.
Retakes and corrections are an option if needed. Information is linked here
Extra Credit:
Extra Credit will be offered on every test. It will also be offered as needed throughout the quarter.
