Puma Reading Club
š¾ Ā Parker Puma Reading Club Ā š¾
All Parker Elementary students are invited to become members of the Puma Reading Club!
Why do we have this program?
It's simple- the more we read, the better we become at reading. One of the best ways to do this is to cultivate reading as a habit. The Puma Reading Club is a way to encourage your child to make reading a regular, daily activity outside of school hours.Ā Ideally, students in K - 5 should read for at least 20 minutes a day outside of school, but our program eases them into a daily reading habit, starting with just 10 minutes a day and gradually growing to that goal of 20 minutes for K-2 and 30 minutes for 3-5.
How does the program work?
š Ā The goal is for each student to read 100 nights or more during the 2023-2024 school year.Ā
šĀ Reading is to be recorded onĀ the 25-night reading forms they receive from theĀ Media CenterĀ
šĀ Reading Form Information:
Record the minutes read outside school hours on ONE LINE of the form. Students can read longer, but only one line should be filled out per night.
Students may backdate their first form to October 1, 2023, if they know they have read on those days.Ā Ā
Fill in the student's first and last name, teacher, and grade.Ā
A parent/Guardian signature is required when the form is completed.Ā
Return the form to the Media Center, where their reading efforts will be recorded.

How can you help your student?
It is important to encourage your student and monitor their reading. For the Puma Reading Club, students should read at their independent reading level, meaning the level at which the child can easily read a text on his/her own. When your child is reading at his/her independent reading level, the child will hardly make any errors and have excellent comprehension of the story. They are reading alone with confidence. Students in kindergarten and first grade who are not yet reading can have someone read to them, whether itās you, an older sibling, grandparents, or other caregivers.
What books DO NOT qualify?
Textbooks that are used within your childās classroom
Books below the childās independent reading level (books should be a good fit and not too easy).Ā Click here to read an article from Scholastic on helping your child pick the perfect read-alone for this program.
