Puma Reading Club

šŸ¾ Ā  Parker Puma Reading Club Ā šŸ¾

All Parker Elementary students are invited to become members of the Puma Reading Club!

Why do we have this program?

It's simple- the more we read, the better we become at reading. One of the best ways to do this is to cultivate reading as a habit. The Puma Reading Club is a way to encourage your child to make reading a regular, daily activity outside of school hours.Ā  Ideally, students in K - 5 should read for at least 20 minutes a day outside of school, but our program eases them into a daily reading habit, starting with just 10 minutes a day and gradually growing to that goal of 20 minutes for K-2 and 30 minutes for 3-5.

How does the program work?

šŸ“š Ā The goal is for each student to read 100 nights or more during the 2023-2024 school year.Ā

šŸ“šĀ  Reading is to be recorded onĀ  the 25-night reading forms they receive from theĀ  Media CenterĀ

šŸ“šĀ  Reading Form Information:

Ā šŸ¾Ā  If your student completes the 75-night form, and you anticipate they will try for 100 nights,Ā  please circle the desired T-shirt size.

Ā Ā šŸ¾Ā  Reading certificates and prizes will be distributed by the Digital Day 2 following the day the form was handed in.Ā

Reading Effort Recognition Levels

Your student will receive the following certificates and prizesĀ

Ā šŸ¾ Ā  25 nights of reading (10 mins per session) - "Black Pearl" level certificate and reading sticker

šŸ¾ Ā  50 nights of reading (15 mins per session) - "Emerald" level certificate and scentedĀ  pencil

šŸ¾ Ā Ā 75 nights of readingĀ  (20 mins per session)- "Topaz" level certificate and a bookmark

šŸ¾ Ā Ā 100 nights of reading (20 mins K-2; 25 mins 3-5 per session)- "Diamond" level certificate and a T-shirt

šŸ¾ Ā  125+ nights of reading (20 mins K-2; 30 mins 3-5 per session)- "Ruby" level certificate and an invitation to the Super Reader Event at the end of the year

How can you help your student?

It is important to encourage your student and monitor their reading. For the Puma Reading Club, students should read at their independent reading level, meaning the level at which the child can easily read a text on his/her own. When your child is reading at his/her independent reading level, the child will hardly make any errors and have excellent comprehension of the story. They are reading alone with confidence. Students in kindergarten and first grade who are not yet reading can have someone read to them, whether itā€™s you, an older sibling, grandparents, or other caregivers.
