AVID @ JGMS
AVID started at JGMS in 2010 with 7th and 8th grade elective classes. Each year we welcome a new group of 7th grade AVID elective students and say goodbye to our 8th grade elective students. Our 8th grade students continue with the AVID Elective Class through North and Tartan High Schools. In the spring of 2017 our building became a National Demonstration School for AVID in our building . This places our building in the top 3% of all the AVID certified sites across the country. Along with our National Demonstration Status we were also just named a School-wide Site of Distinction, which recognizes our staff and how they continuously to support all our students with AVID strategies throughout all our classrooms.
All AVID students are supported by their AVID elective teacher and a group of teachers called the JGMS AVID Site Team. These individuals help, mentor, and guide our AVID students through their classes and their school day. The elective teacher and the site team are the key to a successful and strong support system for our students. Parents and guardians are also part of our JGMS AVID Site Team and if you would like to be a part of this team please contact Kirsten Van Rybroek at kvanrybroek@isd622.org
AVID Students @ JGMS
AVID students at JGMS take an AVID elective class during their regular school day to learn how to be a strong leader and to build individual determination to reach academic goals. Students in the AVID elective take at least one enriched or advanced class in either math, reading, or world language (8th grade). The AVID elective class teaches them how to have success in their advanced classes and build academic goals.
The curriculum in the AVID elective is structured around the acronym of SWICOR, which stands for Speaking, Writing, Inquiry (questioning), Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. Each class period the students participate in activities to help with their growth in all of these areas, which in turn helps them in their classes. In addition to working with the SWICOR learning strategies the AVID students also participate in tutorials and current college students come into our class and help the students learn how to use and implement study groups or tutorials. The tutorials teach them the foundation on how to study and collaborate with other students to prepare them for the college experience while giving them extra support in their classes.
The AVID students visit multiple colleges during their two years at JGMS and participate in other field trips that help with their leadership skills and team building. Every experience these students participate in is to help them build and reach their goal of going to college. The AVID students are given an amazing opportunity to build a strong educational background and develop leadership skills to help them become college ready.
