In this website you will be able to locate general information on autism (characteristics, sensory sensitivities, comorbidity, and gender differences), classroom environment strategies and practices, and preventative strategies for behavioral challenges. This is not an exhaustive resource but will give teachers and educators a resource to refer to as needed.
This website has been created in order to support teachers and staff to better support our students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Because students with ASD may have barriers that interfere with their academic, social, and communication abilities, teachers need a toolbox of resources to utilize on the individual basis. IDEA, 2004 is the law that protects the rights of students with disabilities to have access to a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment (Garten & Murdick, 2005). The information found on this website was based upon current, peer-reviewed literature on autism spectrum disorders. The information and practices presented are evidence-based and were supported throughout the literature review.
In the last 30 years there has been a dramatic increase of children being diagnosed with serious developmental disorders. ASD is one of the most common childhood neurological disorders and there are more students with ASD in the general education classrooms (Lindsay, et al., 2013).
Teachers have felt ill-prepared to handle the destructive or disruptive behaviors of students with ASD. Lindsay, et al. reported that one of the biggest challenges for teachers is a lack of training and knowledge. When teachers are ill-prepared interfering behaviors have the potential to impact the student negatively, such as academic failure, poor social supports, restrictive behavioral techniques, medications and side effects, or a disproportionate rate of suspensions (Flannery & Wisner-Carlson, 2020). This can have a large impact on their life and education. There is not one strategy, one-size fits all approach to students with ASD, but this resource is starting point and will hopefull provide more information and tools for teachers.
