Individuals with ASD have an increase of hyper-sensitivities to taste/smell, tactile, and noise. They also have a higher sensory interest compared to sutdents with other special education needs (Green, et al., 2016).
The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire addresses 7 areas on the Short Sensory Profile. These 7 areas are behaviors that are measured to determine atypical responses to sensory stimuli. There are 7 areas and behaviors that are measured and may be some of the characteristics of those with ASD (2016):
Tactile Sensitivity
Taste/Smell Sensitivity
Movement Sensitivity
Under Responsive/Seeks Sensation
Auditory Filtering
Low Energy/Weak
Visual Auditory Sensitivity
This slideshow discusses the behaviors measured in the Sensory Profile that can be indicators of autism spectrum disorder.
