6th Grade Courses

  • Required Core classes: Math, Social Studies, Science, ELA, Wellness

  • Practical Arts Options: Art, PLTW, SOAR, Computer Applications, (one class per quarter)

  • Band & Choir: Students can sign up for one, both, or neither


6th GRADE BAND

Open to anyone who is interested in learning to play an instrument. Along with learning an instrument, students will study note and rhythm reading, dynamics and musical style. Concerts will be performed during the school year.

6TH GRADE CHOIR

CHOIR is for the student who likes to sing and make music. Students will learn how to improve their voice while singing different styles of music. Participation in choir develops basic music skills, singing techniques and is performance oriented. There will be opportunities to perform solos and ensembles during the year.


ART

Art is for students who like working hands-on and being creative. Students will use the elements of art and principles of design to help us create, talk about and reflect on our projects. They will work with several different mediums including drawing, ceramics, painting, sculpture, printmaking and more. Creativity is enhanced through projects, discussion, and written work using student guided methods--making choices about their studies and artwork.


PLTW: PROJECT LEAD THE WAY

In Automation & Robotics you will get an introduction to the history, development, and influence of automation and robotics. Through hands on projects, you will explore the mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation, and computer control systems. Through the use of VEX Robotics you use the Engineering Design Process to design, build, and program real-world objects.


SOAR (S - strive; O - own our actions; A - attitude; R - reflect)

SOAR is a class that focuses on our MN State Standards in the areas of social and emotional needs. The three units we will focus on for the semester include: All About Me, Self Care, and Gratitude. Our class consists of student reflection, class discussions, and creative thinking to help students become the very best version of themselves.


6th COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

Students will review the proper typing skills and will increase their typing speed and accuracy. Students will learn the basic skills of Google Applications such as Docs, Sheets, Slides Earth and will do some basic coding with Scratch.
