In this Grade 7 MYP Design unit, students will create an orientation video for incoming MYP students, aligning with the global context of "Orientation in space and time."Â
The key concept of "communication" will guide them in understanding how effective communication can bridge different perspectives. They will also explore the related concepts of "form" and "perspective" as they craft the video, considering how these elements influence the communication of information.Â
The statement of inquiry, "Students will understand that communication can help to anchor different perspectives in specific contexts," will prompt students to explore the role of communication in conveying information and reconciling perspectives within the context of welcoming new students to the MYP system.
Communication can help to anchor different perspectives in specific contexts
Communication

Orientation in space and time
Your overall task is to collaboratively plan, design, and produce an orientation video for incoming MYP students. The video should effectively communicate the key aspects of the MYP system and help new students adjust to their new environment. Consider how the form and perspective of your video can influence communication. Your aim is to anchor different perspectives in specific contexts, aligning with the global context of "Orientation in space and time." You will need to employ multimedia design, storytelling, and communication skills to create an engaging and informative resource for incoming students.
For Criterion A, you will produce an interview video.
Working in pairs, you will produce an interview-style video within a 4 to 6 minute timeframe, roughly allocating 1 to 2 minutes to each of the four strands of Criterion A. Your video should feature an interviewer posing questions related to each strand to the interviewee, who will respond accordingly.
Both students should take turns being the interviewer and interviewee for different strands. The questions and answers must align with the strands of Criterion A, focusing onÂ
explaining and justifying the need to solve a problem
constructing a research plan
analysing existing products, and
developing a design briefÂ
The video should effectively demonstrate understanding and application of each strand within the context of the design challenge.
Make sure to consider the unit's key concepts, related concepts, global context and statement of inquiry.

For Criterion B, you will produce a storyboard of your final instructional video.
B1. Start by defining a set of design specifications.
B2. Generate a series of sketches that identify and illustrate the different elements your final video will contain.
B3. Review your sketches and make some decisions about how you will move forward. Once you have done this, present this information and justify your choice
B4. Finish by producing a detailed scene by scene storyboard with detailed descriptions.
